Unhappy Another sad story (23 year old dead)

Sanford, NC -- Lee County sheriff's deputies say a Sanford man shot and killed himself while showing friends the safety of his new gun.

Deputies say the death of 23-year-old Randall Trent Butler was an accident.

Capt. Jeff Johnson says there is nothing to indicate foul play.

Johnson says some friends were in Butler's girlfriend's home when he showed them the safety features of his .22-caliber pistol.

The captain says Butler showed them the safety and how the gun would not fire. Johnson says after Butler pulled the trigger and it didn't fire, he showed them the slide action, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger again.

Johnson says Butler apparently failed to re-engage the safety.

How sad. Simple gun safety would have prevented this death. I'm 23, and would never do this, so please don't chalk it up to his age. His friends and family will be in my prayers.

Nothing to do with age, everything to do with idiocy.

Never point any gun at anything you do not intend to kill. Why do so many assume that the safety is on and that it won't fail or the gun isn't loaded. I would never point a gun at anything especially myself or another person unless it were in self defense.
IMO this is just a lack of common sense.

Nature has a way of eliminating the weak and unfit. A good friend wouldn't let another point a gun at his head. That's a hard lesson to learn the hard way.

I don't even like looking down the barrel of my own gun when I'm cleaning it. it gives me the creeps. I would never point the gun at anyone or myself even if I thought it was unloaded and unchambered. THere are just too many examples like this to think it is a safe practice.

On the other hand, nobody can claim the .22 caliber wasn't able to penetrate his skull.

Safeties fail and people fail to engage safeties, there is NEVER a safe time to point a gun to your head and pull the trigger. Bad practice to demostrate safety and stupidity in the same motion. ALWAYS point in a safe direction! I sincerely hope those that witnessed this horrific scene will be able to overcome and realize that the gun was not to blame.

Horrible story. I do not think it has to do with his age, even older people do foolish things like that. Obviously, all of them knew way to little about firearms, otherwise this would never had happened.

No problem here, looking down the barrel. Of course that's when I am holding the barrel in my hand, and the receiver and slide are laying on the workbench.

My condolences to the families of the young man, and all his friends.

Idiot. Plain and simple. I let it be known to anyone I know to not ever point a gun I show them at me or themselves.
