    Yowch... that'll leave a mark.

Mother nature's way of reminding us we're human... doesn't hurt to double and triple check, or even have a check list in front of us for this sort of thing.

Cleaning a gun at a police range with a bullet in the pipe. Wow. You have to wonder where these people were when brains were handed out.

Sounds like BS to me I've cleaned thousands of guns and I have yet to have the barrel pointed straight down when I'm removing the slide, this guy was probably playing quicks draw and as he drew had his finger on booger hook and squeezed, but "I was cleaning it"sounds a lot better

Perhaps this should have read, "while he was 'clearing' the gun"?

This explanation seems fairly plausible, though the officer should have been pointing the gun downrange while clearing a an FTE or whatever...

With whole classes of recruits having never handled a gun until they got there, it is not suprising. They dont have the 4 rules of safety down pat and its a very new thing to them. At least he had it pointed downward.

    This.

Too many cops a gun is a tool used at work. I know a few that only shoot during qualifications and the first gun they touched was in the academy.

Yup. Three youngsters at our local undeveloped quarry range today, with some .22s. Gave them all earplugs before I fired my toys, and showed them the marks where a .22 rim split and peppered my forehead, suggested eye protection. Clueless hurts
