How many here have hearing loss and/or Tinnitus?

I am pushing 70 and most of my life since about age 14 I have shot a lot, operated loud equipment and was around same in close environment. For many years I coached 4-H Trap and Skeet and competed myself. As a result, I have lost 60% of the hearing in my left ear (right handed).

I now use hearing protection all the time around guns and equipment. If I could live over those early years, I would have worn out a lot of ear plugs and muffs. Macho does not cut it.

I insist that my kids and grand kids wear good protection and suggest it to my shooting/hunting friends.

mine is from m1's and 50 cal ak ak guns. used a lot of cig filters but did not do the job. you learn from mistakes. 70 now and an hearing aid in each ear and I still say huh.

Could it be from those Shotguns going off in Norman when OU scored. Now if you were an OSU fan, you would not have had to hear the shotguns, just Pistol Pete's pistols.:smile:

62 and my hearing is as good as it ever was and that is pretty good. I don't know why. Rock and roll, drag racing, building race engines, armor officer in the Army. I was a training officer for 18 months and all the trips to rifle ranges, machinegun ranges, mortar firing, artillery demos were without hearing protection. We were supposed to wear it, but I didn't. When I got back into shooting in 2006 I started wearing hearing protection to help me to keep my hearing.

I guess cigarette filters did not work when they were firing the 106 recoiless rifles in the Army. Never gave us protection, just advice on putting filters or ammo brass in the ears.

so any of you guys try the stuff advertised in the American rifleman, called quiet? Its some kind of herbal vitamin stuff that i highly doubt will do any good....

Is that the stuff that stops the ringing in your ears. I wonder if it really works. Has any body tried it.

I have periodic Tinnitus in my left ear only. I think my HBP or Diabetes might have something to do with it. I've always worn protection.

Any time it's quiet I hear ringing in my ears, and every now and then on of my ears (usually my left) will ring very loudly and I can't hear anything else out of it. Don't think it has anything to do with shooting because I wear hearing protection when shooting anything bigger than a .22, and really haven't done all that much shooting in my life (being as I'm only 22 years old)

I have "moderate" hearing loss in both ears, from a variety of causes. Working on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, loud rock concerts, gunfire, motorcycle riding, etc. I wear hearing protection every time I'm exposed to anything loud these days. I don't want to loose any more of my hearing.

My is more work related for previous jobs working on oil and gas pipelines than shooting.

i seldom wear ear protection grew up hunting and all i also used to build racing engines and when a 350 or 454 fires up in a small garage running just headers its loud also used to race the cars as well so my hearing sucks and i definatly have a little hearing loss in my left ear

I have hearing loss due to my gears in the military. I wear hearing protection when its available.

I have had constant tinnitus for about thirty five years. I missed my ears when dropping 81mm rounds on a FFE, and they have been ringing ever since. No hearing loss indicated in the multiple hearing tests I have taken since then, just the constant, non-ending F#. I hardly notice it most of the time.

High pitch deafness and tinnitus 24x7 - it SUCKS!
