    Lost a friend tonight

My golden retriever, Redd, has been my companion since 2003 when I adopted him from a shelter. He had obviously been abused since he was scared of every noise that any one made. He was my buddy. When my wife and I seperated, he was there was for me the entire time. He kept me sane when it would hace been easy to drop into the depths of depression.

He stumbled going out the steps into the back yard about a month ago and hurt his leg. Didn't seem to be getting any better so I had it checked. He had a tumor on his shoulder that we decided to watch.

It got bigger very fast and was bothering him more and more. He lost all the muscle on that shoulder in a matter of days. The vet had no doubt it was cancer.

I had to take him in tonight to have him put to sleep. He was in pain and it was hard for him to get around. He was losing weight fast. He lost 2 lbs in a week for every week since we found the illness.

The vet said it was the right thing to do. I sat there when he shot the phenobarpital into his IV. Redd tucked his head in next to my leg and I patted him and he passed away.

He blessed me in so many ways and I know that I blessed hom and his life as well. It makes me sad to know that tonight he will not place his head next to the bed for one last pat before laying down to go to sleep. But I know he was suffering and is in a better place.

He was my friend, and I will miss him.

Losing a dog stinks. Been there and done that to many times.

Redd sounds like a good soul, he was sent to you for a purpose and now it is time for him to return.

You guys have NO IDEA how hard it hits me when even a stranger loses a pet.

I feel your pain and loss. You have my heartfelt sympathy and hope you recover emotionally soon.

It was the right thing to do. But it sure doesn't lessen the grief.

I hope one day you find a new companion and friend to fill in for Redd.

So sorry to hear. I posted not long ago, back in January, of my loss of a pet that meant more to me than anything alive. I had to put her to sleep because of illness.

That was January 29th on a Friday morning. I still break down some nights and cry. I miss her more than I can stand.

It is painful and, unfortunately, I know of no words that bring any comfort.

Sorry for your loss! Just remember that you gave him the best part of his life, loved him. He could have done no better anywhere else.

We had to the same thing 2 years ago, put down our pet Silky Terrier of 18 years. I suggest doing what we did...went out the very next day and found Cooper, (my avatar) our Maltese. You can't replace a pet, but getting another one right away sure makes the healing process easier.

Hugs to you. Peace to Redd. Dogs are incredible teachers, we are so lucky to have them.

Sorry for your loss. My Golden is getting up their in years. He's had knee surgery but gets around really well (slight limp, but he's not in pain). I dread the day I have to make the same decision you do.

It takes losing one to realize that the old saying is right, Dogs truly are mans best friend.
