Well, that is some sad news. He was one of the great TV cowboys for sure.
It wasn't until just a couple years ago when he was on Bill O'Reilly that I found out Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame is his brother.
He will definitely be missed.

Another part of my childhood gone![]()
So many of the great western cowboys are gone now. James Arness was a different breed of actor, he shunned the limelight. He's gone to join the other greats like John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Ben Johnson, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond and many others. He'll be missed by his many fans. RIP Mr. Arness.

Gunsmoke ran for 20 yrs. It was a "must see" at my house when I was a kid. They don't make them like that anymore. Rest in peace Jim.
I'm from the setting of Gunsmoke and I'm sure I've watched some episodes when I was very young but I really need to revist some of those. Rest in Peace Mr. Arness. Sounds as though he was a pretty classy guy, something missing in most of today's celebrities.

During the D-Day invasion, the landing craft didn't have depth finders. This was a bit problematic as boat operators needed to get close enough to not drown the troops laden with combat gear, but they didn't want to get too close. In lieu of a depthfinder, Mr. Arness, at 78" tall, was determined to be the next best thing on his boat. He was sent out into the water to determine its depth, and he came ashore on Anzio Beach. Most will focus on your fake life, but I thank you for what you did in real life.

He was pretty much in real live what he showed on the Gunsmoke show. I still love to watch the re-runs. God bless you Mr. Dillon!
