    How ironic...........

Reading (and commenting) on several recent posts here about family history, thinking of how important it is in our lives today.....

My Grandfather passed away today while attending his church services in baton Rouge. He was 96.

He taught me (through action and how he lived life) so much about being a man, how gumbo and jambalaya 'should' be prepared, and what it means to stand strong through lifes 'issues'. He survived a great depression, three wars, and life in the Louisiana swamps. As wise and strong as any Acaidian around.......

It wasn't until after I'd grown up, been through combat myself, and had my own family to look after that I even began to grasp what he really was.

Thanks for the post. You are blessed to have the memory of such a fine man. All the old timers in my family are gone but 1 who is 87. The rest were in their 80's and 90's when they passed. I sure do miss those fine men from a far past time. Golden Shellback? IDL and Equator crossing? Wow. I'm just a plain ol' ordinary shellback.

My sincerest condolences on your loss. Your grandfather continues on this day through you. We seldom grasp what's in front of us when we should....yet later we seek that which we had before us but yet failed to grasp at the time. Our past holds more knowledge than we could ever think of gaining in the future. Our mistakes are made by not listening to the past and depending more on the future. I miss my grandfather as well.....he taught me many things that I hope honor him to this day whenever I do them.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, but happy to hear you had him for such a long time. My father died when he was in his 50s. He was WWII Navy....Pacific....also a shellback. I wish I could have had him longer. As a adult I would love to have heard of his experiences. I know he had 7 ships sunk from under him. I know he was on the U.S.S.Missouri at the signing. I remember when he took me with him to the local pub (Jimmy's Jigger) as a wee girl. He would get me a ice cream and I would sit at the bar as he talked to his fellow vets. He told of bobbing around in the water as sharks ate some of his mates. (I sure he never realized how much I heard, but I would never go into the Ocean on vacation because of it). I have a knife he made while in the service, made out of part of a deck and the cockpit of the Zero that hit it. He will continue to live through me and through my child and grand child because of the stories. Wish I knew more. Treasure the memories and pass them along. They are what lives when we are all dust.

Condolances from another shellback. Hang in there friend.

Thank you all for your words and thoughts. I learned of his passing just moments 'after' when I called my mother for our weekly
'howzit going' call.... she had just hung up with the hospital.

On my rare day off and prusing one of my fravorite 'exits on the info-superhighway' I felt I should say something before the tears started.....
I think being out here 'way overseas' and not being able to make it home right now hurts as much as his passing.

He was certinally the patriarch of our clan and having been here for as long as we were blessed to have him, he will be missed something awful.
His was a full life and a quiet, sure strength in the uncertiny of lifes directions. His example is a basis for how I make many decisions....

Again, thank you all for taking the time to post and say what you have. It does mean something to me.......

Sorry to hear of your loss...hard to complain about 96 solid years.
We can learn an awful lot from our elders if we'd only listen, and people don't listen much these days.
    Thanks for sharing...

I'm guessing he would understand, wouldn't have it any other way and couldn't be more proud.

I haven't had grandparents since I was 17, but most of what guides me came from them.

My condolences on your loss and a big THANK YOU for both his and your service. Thoughts and prayers your way.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather, 96 years old is quite an accomplishment, and from what you wrote it looks like he was "wise and strong" to the very end.

I was very close to all four of my grandparents, they were like secondary parents to me. They've all passed away now, I think about them a lot, and hope I can follow their good example for my own grandchildren.

Turn the election's in 2014 to a "2A Revolution". It will serve as a 1994 refresher not to "infringe" on our Second Amendment. We know who they are now.........SEND 'EM HOME. Our success in this will be proportional to how hard we work to make it happen.

Words cannot express the loss of our loved ones. Many of us do know the pain of separation in the physical realm. I live with the faith that one day, all of us will be reunited in a place that feble human words cannot attempt to describe.

My Maternal Grandmother passed on several years ago, I was her 1st grandchild and we had a very special bond, that even today goes beyond physical boundaries. Her love of American History, nature, family past and present and many other things helped to shape me into what I am today. I love her and always will.

I share in your grief, it seems like your grandfather was a special person to you, much like my grandmother was to me. Time will heal the wound left by his passing, but the scar will remain to remind you of him.

May the souls of the departed find eternal rest and may the Peace of God which passes all human understanding, be with you, and remain with you always.

your fortunate in a number orf ways
to have been in a family that passed knowledge of the true values of how one's life may be lived

and to have your own family with which to continue the passing along

--so long as there are those who remember the departed, their wisdom and love continues--they live on
