The sheriff who never carried a gun
I just saw on a local news site that North Carolina homeboy Andy Griffith has died at 86. One news site called him an "NC legend", another said "NC icon". Both were correct. It's a sad day for NC'ers. He was much-loved here for his portrayal of a kinder, gentler LEO who always had a hot and a cot for the town drunk Otis and allowed his halfwit deputy Barney Fife to carry one round in his shirt pocket. Rest in peace, Andy.

The thing with the characters in that show is that Andy somehow always found a non-violent
win-win solution to problems. And Barney somehow found courage when it was needed.

I loved his tv shows and movies; especially "No Time for Sargent's"
But!!!!
Let's not forget the real Andy was NOT what he portrayed on tv!

I visited Mt. Airy often when I lived in VA. Lots of car shows there. Quaint little town.

Andy never got an Emmy for his show. Don Knotts got five for best supporting actor (Don was originally cast for the part of Goober, but having worked with Griffith on a movie before, they let the two try the Sheriff/Deputy parts together and it clicked). This show will live in re-runs forever.

Tell you what. Watch the old stuff and there's some fundamental stuff in there that works today and pretty much forever. Good simple lessons.
For me this kind of hit hard. Some years ago I was watching the Andy Griffith show and realized that my own dad was the real life Andy. Just one hell of a nice guy, the original. Dads gone not long ago and this news caught me off.
Yeah, the real Andy was not my guy but I didn't know him the way we knew The Andy.
Anyway, we all have our own weird places that we go to from time to time. Sorry.
