    Some worrisome news today

Went to the dermatologist today to have a spot checked out. His early diagnosis was possible melanoma but of course can't tell without a biopsy. Good news is he is only "somewhat concerned" as I will hopefully have caught this early enough. Biopsy on the 12th. Of course with all the financial burdens of my wifes problems with MS we don't have any health insurance and Mr. Rumsfeld has decided to take away veterans health benefits unless we're already under treatment or in abject poverty. Sure hope this comes up negative or just precancerous.

Heck Eric - as if you hadn't enough on your plate.

Well - I can think back to a small mole-like deal my Dad had on his nose way back - I guess he was about 60 or so. They called it then a ''rodent ulcer'' - same thing tho.

They excized it and all went just fine - thing is these things are no biggie if caught early and so every chance here yours will be in the end a minor deal.

Fingers will be well crossed for you my friend and do report back in after the results on 12th. Hope it will be just a brief blip of concern and no more.

    ways around this

Have you tried using your local DAV or Vet groups?Unfortunately and I told alot of vets at work to go register and they put it off.So unless your a bonafide Combat Vet or can prove you can't afford medical insurance(which BTW I think if you push the issue you could get in just keep fighting) that you might be SOL.

As Chris said, we'll all keep our fingers crossed for you. I know the wait for the biopsy will make you nuts as I went through all that with my colon cancer a few years ago. But the odds are in your favor. Let us know what you find out.

BTW, how's your wife? We haven't had an update on that in a while....

Thanks guys. Gotta admit waiting has never been one of my strongest traits. I worry that if this turns out really wrong whose going to take care of my wife?

But at any rate the better half is fair. She is still talking and walking. She's started having intestinal paralasys again so is back on a mostly liquid diet. Still able to tackle a few soft items every few days. Says she's gettin' sick of ice cream, can you believe that? She also displayed her artwork for a charity fundraiser for a lady whose having a bone marrow transplant. It about wiped her out but she says she has to do something to help others as she knows to well what it is to need help. Sometimes it's funny how the people who are in rough shape are often the ones who want to help others the most!

She hopes to do another one in a month for the same lady. I told her I'll back her on this stuff as long as it dosn't start hurting her. She's the kind who'll give the coat off her back in a blizzard if she thinks she can help someone despite her own battles.

Will let y'all know something when I do. Thanks again...

ELCruiser - I hope everything turns out OK for you.
I sure would not sweat it yet & especially since you caught it & had it looked at.

Eric, I am wondering about your statement concerning veterans health care. The Department of Veterans Affairs is a department level organization and is in no way controlled by Mr. Rumsfeld or the Department of Defense. I imagine Mr. Rumsfeld could change the rules for health care for military retirees because they are supposed to be cared for by the military. I know that during my time working for what was then called the Veterans Administration we had some confusion on who got veterans health care, but that was due to people confusing retiree benefits with veterans benefits.

I suggest that you look at this site and start filing for benefits. http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility/
The one thing I know is that no one can tell you by phone whether you are eligible or not. All determinations of that type are made by people assigned as adjuticators and the determination is made only after an application is filed. If the finding is against you then appeal. Most of the veterans organizations have specialists who are very good at helping you get the benefits that are due to you and helping with appeals if necessary. Do not accept anyone's opinion about your eligibility. File the app and let the VA make the determination.

We will continue to keep you and your wife in our prayers.

I hope all works out well and that the biopsy is neg.

If not, rest assured that Florida is the best place to be. My mom had a level 3 melanoma on her shoulder (5 being the highest). She was treated at Mofitt cancer center 8 years ago and is doing fine. As long as you detect it early enough you're good and if the doc isn't worried, then you probably don't have to worry either.

I'll send one up for you when I go to bed this evening. God Bless.

You and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers.

I may be a simpleton, but I can't understand when tests are done (especailly major life-threatening tests!) why waits can tend to be so long!! In a perfect world, you'd know when you left your appointment....

    ...I keep dreamin....

    Hang in there!

    Quick update

Had the biopsy yesterday. Doctor said that I had several things in my favor (Why don't they tell you this while scaring the stuffing out of you with the first appointment when they tell you of possible cancer?) such as small size, no family history of skin cancer and visually examining the site post biopsy. He also said, of course, nothing guarenteed untill report comes back in TWO WEEKS! Arrggghhhh......

As a side note he decided to do a full torso, extremety exam after the biopsy. So, remove your shirt please. Well, first off doc I need to tell you that I'm legally liscenced to carry a firearm and one is currently residing just below my left armpit in a chest holster. If this bothers you I would be glad to reschedule the exam or I could go lock this in my truck. The weapon is safe and if you like I'll remove it and the chest holster now for the exam. Balls in your court doc!

His, and the nurses, attitudes where a bit shocked but he said OK, I'm fine with that just put it on the chair in the corner please. Glad I now know he's at least not anti!

    Now for the wait....
