    I can't describe how I feel

Every Sunday for the past three weekends I have gone with the Patriot Guard and American Legion Riders on "Welcome Home" rides to welcome servicemen home on leave.
The first weekend's ride was to greet a former classmate of my daughter, a Marine home from Iraq. His parents were so proud of him; were eager to tell us he had re-enlisted and asked for Special Forces duty. Handsome, fit young fellow with his whole life in front of him and he elected to keep on serving our contry.

I got an email this afternoon, he's coming home again.
    This time in a box.
He was killed Monday in a training accident at Camp Pendelton while doing a urban warfare exercise. There was not supposed to be any live ammo present, the incident is still under investigation.

My knees went weak, my stomach tied in a knot. I don't personally know this young man or his parents, our only encounter was three weeks ago when I shook their hands and told them "Thank you for what you do".

Funeral services have not been scheduled as of yet, I do not care if it's ten below and snowing on that day I will be there to support his family.
I'm a child of the 60's, but I got over it.

Well that really sucks. He paid the ultimate price of freedom. He should be remembered for his sacrifice dedication. Even training can be dangerous.

Sorry to hear this. That is very sad! What a true Patriot he was wanting to go back and serve his country. Thing's like this should never happen, never!

    RIP Marine!

    I Hate Stories Like This...

I think a lot about what our troops do and how hard they train...they live and fight in very tough conditions.
I wish his family well...tough times...it will not be easy for them.

Sisco...please let the family know that we ALL send our thoughts and prayers...

Ditto on letting the family know we will be praying for them. Whether he paid the ultimate price on the field of battle or in training he still was serving his country and deserves the honors accordingly. May God give comfort to his friends, family and comrades.

My condolences to the family, and friends.

If not for men, and women serving in the armed forces we would not be able to enjoy are freedom.

    Thanks to all of them.

Sorry to hear about this loss. Seems "unnecessary" since it was training, and so tragic. Our thoughts are with you and the families.

We never think about those things. It just happens....
I knew a 21 year old lady who was in the navy. She was a parachute rigger. Her job was to test the newly designed 'chutes.
Well... one day one didn't open from who knows how high. I just hoped she didn't feel a thing. What a God-awful feeling that must be to know your time is up in a minute or two and there is no way to control it.
God bless the marine and his family....
