A thought for memorial day.....
This weekend pools open, grill fire up, beer gets drunk and music gets played. We honor the men and women who have sacrificed everything for this country so that we may be free. for many of us though, this weekend is a very difficult time. As a veteran, I want everyone to not just rember our soldiers, but their families and loved ones as well. They too feel the ravages of war, and will always be broken for it. If you know a veteran, thank them. If you know a family who has lost a veteran, young or old, thank them. A simple thank you means more than any award, any ceremony.
To my fellow veterans, I salute you. Many of us have lost friends. I want to share with everyone a poem that has always brought me comfort. I hope that others can find the same peace in it that I have found.
When I come to the end of the road
and the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free!
Miss me a little, but not too long,
and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we
Miss me but let me go.
For this journey we all must take,
and each must go alone.
It’s all part of the Master plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing
Miss me, but let me go.

May god bless our troops and their families. I have been in harms way and known fear, but never as intimately as when my son was in Iraq.
