RIP Tim Samaras- My co-worker and friend

As many of you have seen in today's headlines, storm chaser Tim Samaras with killed on Friday along with his son, Paul, and co-researcher, Carl Young. I worked with Tim on an almost daily basis from 2002 to 2010, with Tim serving as my boss for the last couple of those years. I watched Tim build the original probes he used to record the first ever pressure data taken from inside a tornado, and even helped with some of the engineering on the later versions of the units. His appearances on National Geographic and Discovery Channel filled all of us with pride that we knew such an outstanding scientist and friend. He was a great mentor to me and many other engineers, scientists and technicians, and gave his life in an attempt to learn more about deadly storms. I last exchanged emails with Tim a month or two ago concerning our preferred Denver area machine shops. I have so much to say, but words are difficult to find. My deepest condolences to Tim's wife over the loss of her husband and son, and to the family of of Mr. Young.

I know it's not much but atleast he went doing what he loved and that's about all any of us can ask for.

    Rest in peace Tim.

    My condolences for your loss.

Not only did he go doing what he wanted, but he was trying to help people. That is something big. RIP for him, his son and for Mr. Young.

    My sorrow also.

He was a very profound person in the field. I know some of the origional PSU/AccuWeather plank holders from State College and later lived in Lawton, OK, twice. I may have actually met him, or some of your mutual associates, in that field of study, out running the roads in OK in the late 80s and mid 90s.

My wife and I were talking about this a couple of hours ago, after watching yesterday's Weather Cannel feeds (had it recorded) and seeing the news today. I just saw this tread you posted. What a loss. Very tragic.

The family, and you as a personal friend, must just be devistated. Beyond this much, I have no more words.........................

I just read about this last night. I'm so sorry for the loss of their lives. It's so tragic. My sincere condolences to you, all their friends, family and especially his wife. I can't imagine how you go on after losing your husband and son at the same time.
    God bless them all.

I doubt if there are very many people who didn't get to know him through his shows. He took on an obviously
dangerous job for our benefit. And if we didn't know what a tornado could do from up-close-and personal experience, we
    all do now, through Tim.

They had a really nice tribute to him on the Weather Channel this morning. I could not watch it because the screen kept getting misty.
