Yesterday and this morning I was doing a small survey of people I met. I ased them the historical significance of this date, out of 10 people age 19-50 only 1 knew that it was Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day. My U.S. Flag had gotten torn in one of our many wind storms, so I went to Fred Meyers in Monroe Wa. to buy a new one. They didn't have any, so I requested to talk to the manager. I asked him why didn't he have a flag display since Pearl Harbor day was aproaching (he was one of the people who didn't know). I also told him I had planned to buy a flag for my great nephew who is currently stationed in Afganistand and is supposed to return soon. I also told him I felt that there are probably others who would like to buy one as a gift for those stationd in a war zone and may be returning. His comment was "well it is a little late to do anything about it now.
I have come to the conclusion tht the schools here in Washington State are very inadequate (test are proving it so). I also feel that the people here are very lacking where Patriotism is concerned.
Rant off.
Teacher's unions do not in any way contribute positively to the education of our youth....
As a father of 2 school age children, I take a very active role in their education. I even have lesson plans emailed to me by my children's teachers. I know when they are having a test and on what......
It is my job as their dad to make sure they succeed while they live in my home....
that said, we could all use a history lesson now and then, hence the video.....

I remember this day...65 years ago at 8am Hawaiian time we were attacked! Today at 12:03 (just after noon) I bowed my head and thought about all those men we lost in that attack. I shared my feelings with those around me and who unfortunatly had no clue what I was talking about. Atleast I remembered it, held it solume and I am glad that there are people like me who will not forget it...
Thanks
My flag was flying high!!!

Both my flags flew high - but they always do. However the day/date sure does have a very sad significance, and for me always will.

Just as an aside, remember that the war was already two years old by this time. Remember Pearl Harbor, buy don't forget those lost before, both in Europe and the Far East, we even got officially involved.

Lest we forget.
12/7/41 is a date that should continue to live in infamy. We can and should forgive, but we should never forget for the sake of those who sacrificed their lives.......
It's not about the caliber you carry, it's about how you USE it.

Governor Taft of Ohio actually said that flags should be flown at half staff today for Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day. Back when I was in NROTC we always had a ceremeny on December 7th, and both years that I was honored to attend we had guest speakers who were at Pearl Harbor during the attack. It really was a great honor listening to them share their experiences. I would wager that there are even a great number of history majors at my college who couldn't of told you what today was though, unless students educate themselves about such things, they usually never learn them.

raevan: Some years ago when my son was coming back from the Gulf, about a month before his return I contacted my US Representative. I had heard that you could request a flag that had been flown over the US Capitol. They routinely provide these for their constituents. I think there was some nominal charge of about $20 or something....I don't accurately recall though.

Thanks Jimmy I will have to look into that.
You might find this link useful in generating interest. It has underwater footage of the USS Arizona.

It is sad when such a event can be forgotten, I suspect that in 70 years people will be saying the same about 9/11.

Thanks to all for the pic's...remain vigilant?...most certainly...our day is approaching...
Don't be caught off guard...

AMEN. As a father myself of 4 school age children, it is certainly refreshing to see other dad's take an active role in their children's education and not leaving it up to the knuckleheads in the public school system who are indoctrinating the kids with leftist/socialist crap.

It seems a lot of people have forgot Pearl harbor and 9/11.they seem to want to back off every time the going gets tough. where are the flags that used to be on cars .People forget to soon and the same thing happens again and again. Quite a few of the kids growing up today have no idea whats going on. A lot of them ignore the news and go on their uninformed way. tom
