    Spring Break or Easter Vacation?

My Son his wife and two children spent a week at the ranch and it was better than I deserve. We caught Bull Frogs and trapped a coon and let it go once pictures were taken. The Granddaughter brought her Red ryder BB gun the chickens provided a plethora of eggs as targets. Soon the 22's were brought out for the Son and Daughter-inlaw. The lever action Henry 22 Mag was the hit of the day and the granddaughter begged to shoot it. Dad finally gave in with a little help from Grandpa. First round went into an egg and it exploded. The little girl let out a scream and shot three more boxes of 22 mag. That gun went home with them in the Motorhome. I miss it it was my everyday ranch gun but I am a softie when it comes to my granddaughter. Then the little 22 semi auto got fired up and everybody had a lot of fun shooting it.

I looked down at one of the federal boxes and it was from Big 5 and listed at $2.59 then I noticed a sale tag and it was $.99. I was one of those guys that bought 22 on sale even when the safe was overflowing. I have no idea how long I have had that ammunition but I am guessing 20 years. Not a single misfire or failure to fire.

They are gone now and the place seems empty. Just the wife and I seems pretty quiet. Already talking to my Son about when he is coming back.

Just the ramblings of a Grandpa. Back to working on fences gates and general maintenance. Not near as much fun as spoiling grandkids.

Awwww.......that is really a sweet story! I really am happy for you that you had such a wonderful family visit - even at the cost of your .22. I so wish we could do things like that with my grandkids.

Thanks for sharing. Love family stories and memories like these. You are a great grandpa. Thanks for investing in and influencing your kids and grandkids not just in firearms but most importantly a well-lived life and good character.

I find supremely ironic that God in his wisdom and grace has given man freedom of choice bounded by 10 simple rules. Man in his finite wisdom has created millions of rules to limit freedom of choice and the personal responsibility of his fellow man.

I see why you will miss your rifle, but just think of the new memories she will have with "her first rifle that her grandpa gave to her". You can't buy memories like that. It will said over and over for years to come and maybe some day she will pass the rifle down to her kids while telling them the story of how she got it. That is what family is all about.

Just what I was thinking. The things I got from my grandparents mean more to me than they probably ever knew and I still got the gun/antiques. You can always get another gun but to her, that is her Granddaddy's gun and you can't buy one of those!

Three more bricks of 500 out of the Henry. That li'l girl's got it bad.

Gotta love eggs, balloons and such. Sounds like she's well on her way to being an Olympic champ, if she keeps it up.

Oooh, she got a Henry .22 lever out of the deal, all on top of seeing grandpa too? What's not to like?

They'll be back before you know it. I'm sure they'd even love getting involved with some of the "maintenance" stuff around the ol' homestead. Might not sound sexy, mending a fence, but it can be time well spent with gramps. Never underestimate the power of love ... and simply having time with someone. Might not actually fix the darned thing, in the end, but that won't really be the point.

Sounds like it was a real joy, for all.

    Great story, Manolito.

It's time to start preparing for another get-together over Memorial weekend - or Independence Day.
