    Osprey close and personal

    fishing osprey 035.JPGfishing osprey 036.JPG

Took the wife fishing today and we were sitting there with three fish on the stringer and a juvenile Osprey tried to take the stringer and got hung up in the line. No hooks just the line wrapped on his wing. No one was hurt during the filming of this event especially me.

Next to a Bald Eagle an Osprey is my favorite bird of prey, well tied for 2nd with a Peregrine Falcon!

Way to go. I hope you at least gave it one of your fish for its trouble.

Yes he took one small rainbow. I have a great video but unfortunately I used a couple of descriptive adjectives so until I learn to edit out the audio it will have to stay at the household stil.JPG

that's friggin' awesome. the second pic with it looking at you is priceless. I say we have a "caption contest" for that picture.

just don't let the tree huggers see because then hell will be raised about fishing endangering bird species or something.

That is special. How many others would have simply cut the line and left the bird to die? I am a big time lover of birds of prey and I commend you for your compassion. I would hope that you might share this with the organization linked here....... Well done !

Wow! Glad you were able to help. Looks like he was cool with it. I'm surprised he didn't rip you to shreds! They'll like pigeons around here. Our office is on the river and one landed outside my boss's window. The talons are enough to make a grown man squeamish thinking about them coming at you. :)

I have always wanted a peregrine. My son was watching a show yesterday and they were showing how they train them. They were swinging some sort of target around in the air and pulling it away just before it caught it. I guess you have to be fast considering they're the fastest birds in the world. Such beautiful creatures. Anyway, this training lets the birds fly and hunt and apparently they love it.

You mean you didn't pull out your EDC and shoot it???!!!??? That's what the anti firearm people believe we would do!

Hey, all kidding aside, what you did was exemplary in saving an Osprey. Birds are one of my favourite things and I would have done exactly the same. I rescued a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk from a garage once while a dog was leaping up attempting to catch it. Fortunately for me, I had some very thick gloves to protect me from those razor sharp talons. The Eastern Screech Owl I rescued once was not so thankful and clawed my hands into hamburger.

    You did good.

Nay, just a bird lover. Poor bird doesn't know about fishing line. Lucky for it a nice guy helped him out of a jam. One little fish for his trouble is no big deal.
