    Florida Mosquito Virus.....

    A NOTICE ABOUT MOSQUITOES &
    CHIKUNGUNYA FEVER

At Thursday’s Board of Directors meeting, President Robyn Hankins addressed the concerns of public health officials in Florida over a debilitating mosquito-borne illness new to this country called chikungunya. While there is no broad threat as yet, this notice is being sent because Robyn wants all residents to be aware not only of those concerns, but also of the importance of protecting ourselves against this and other mosquito-borne diseases as we move further into the rainy season and peak mosquito activity months.
Until this month, the more than 240 people in the United States who had become sick with chikungunya this year -- some of them Florida residents -- had acquired it abroad, most notably in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Florida had seen 81 cases of chikungunya (pronounced chik-en-GUN-ye). Palm Beach County had 13 of those cases. But two weeks ago, health officials reported the first two confirmed cases in which mosquitoes in the continental United States were thought to have spread the virus. Both cases were in South Florida. One of those infected is a 50-year-old man in Palm Beach County. The other patient is a 41-year-old woman in Miami-Dade. In both cases, officials said, a person infected with the virus after visiting the Caribbean was then bitten again by an uninfected mosquito in Florida, which then became infected and transmitted the illness further.
Though chikungunya is rarely fatal, it can cause high fever and severe pain and swelling in joints, as well as muscle pain and headaches. Dengue fever is another mosquito-borne virus that is usually acquired abroad but has also been transmitted locally. Both are spread by the same two types of aggressive mosquitoes known for daytime biting.
This means that people must stay vigilant against mosquitoes during the day as well as the evening. It is also important that residents here remember the mosquito-control basics: reach for bug spray before going outside (apply insect repellant over sunscreen, not the other way around); wear long pants and long sleeves outside; and make sure screens on windows are intact. To prevent breeding, dump the birdbath twice a week, and dump or monitor other sources of water, like flower pots and small containers. Consider purchasing biological mosquito control for ponds and water gardens or other standing water. These circular “Mosquito Dunk” pellets are safer than chemical insect repellents and last for thirty days. They are sold at Home Depot and online.
No one wants to be a fear monger, but let’s protect ourselves. Chikungunya-infected mosquitoes are now living, breeding and feeding on human blood in South Florida.

I also felt that the below quote from the article was important for our southern border states with the influx of illegal aliens coming into the country.
