Never really understood the reason for retiring a reconnaissance aircraft that couldnt be shot down even with today weapons in favor of one that can be.

I know Stealth and Satellites but if Stealth IS discovered that air craft is a sitting duck. And Satellites have to be in right position to be of any use.

The Blackbird could get the info you wanted when you wanted it with no risk to itself in a matter hours anywhere on the planet.

A fellow classmate of mine in OCS, and with whom I roomed after graduating was the son of a 'sled' pilot out of Beale AFB. Last name was 'Watson' I believe.

When I read the thread title I thought you were referring to the original Sled which I worked on early in my career.

North American F-100 Super Sabre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have heard the SR-71 called by different name but Sled was never one I heard before most of the time it was referred to as Habu. When I was stationed we used to have one come in for Class 3 mods for different test equipment. They were always very hush, hush about it but when you saw all of the drip pans being taken to King hanger you knew what was coming in.

On a westbound trip once we were going from Hawaii to Guam. The turbulence was bad and crews were calling back and forth with center trying to find an altitude with a better ride. In all the conversations one pilot calls and asks how is the ride at FL 600 (60,000 feet), center calls back and says they have no reports but if you can make you are cleared to FL 600. The pilots next call was, Roger descending to FL 600. The radios strangely got quite after that.

It is an 'inside joke', Top. It was not appropriate for me to raise the issue = here. Apologies (Note: no ITAR or EAR issues were discussed). Drop it = my apologies.
