    Faces of war.

I was listening to NPR today and they ran an interesting little piece about an artist that got permission to take pictures of some of our troops.

Photographer Suzanne Opton's portraits of U.S. troops offer a distinctive look at the faces of our military. Her images are on exhibit at the Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art gallery in New York through March 24.

It was interesting to see the expressions (or lack of) on these faces. The artist was't trying to capture anything in particular. She did not pose the faces, just asked them to lay their heads on the table.

I don't know about you, but I can see war on their faces.

And too often, a very visible mark on a man's soul.

They are all kids! I'm no AARP member, but dang, they all look so young. Except for their eyes.

I guess it caught me off guard. Most of what you see is the higher brass (older guys) in the press room, or the soldiers with their faces half covered with sunglasses, helmets, etc. It just doesn't get publicized this way often.

1000 yard stare. Has been shown by photograph in every war we've had back to the Civil War. The "stare" happened before the Civil War as well but photography wasn't used to document war before then.

Brilliant. Thanks for the link. I wish I was up NYC way to go see the gallery...
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
