    Remember my Grandfather

For Memorial Day, I think this is appropriate.

My grandfather passed away this year. He spent nearly 3 years fighting ALS. He was a Navy man, serving in the Pacific. When he came back after the war, he went to work for Bendix, working as an engineer for the nuclear weapons program.

In the late 1960's he started his own manufacturing company. He had started working with a surgeon in the Kansas City area, and designed and developed a surgical device for treating burn victims. His company has been manufacturing life-saving equipment from 1967 to this day, and his legacy continues through his company, which is still going strong.

Right before he passed, he told me he had something for me. Sitting there next to his bed was a Japanese WWII rifle... in mint condition. It is complete with 2 bayonets.

Although the specifics of what causes ALS are really not known, there were a very high number of cases reported from the particular ship he served on, a ship which helped to transport nuclear materials to be used on Japan.

He was fortunate to live a long life, and yet somehow, he was still a casualty of war.

They all were. In a sense, we all are.

May you cherish the memory of this good man, who dedicated his life to protecting and improving the lives of others.

Pete - a fitting tribute you wrote.

While there is obviously an unfillable gap it seems this was one very special man, and so he will live on thru his work and your association with him - something to celebrate for sure.

Thx also for the excellent pics - I salute him and may he rest in sublime peace.

Too many take this day as a holiday, day off or just plain another day w/ o mail. Great tribute to your grandfather.

Rocky, it's a holiday only in the true sense of the word - holy day. It is that because it commemorates those who gave it all and have therefore hallowed the day.
