    She's gone...

Today I lost a daughter and gained a soldier, we escorted the Daughter off to her basic, spent the night up in Lansing and went where we were allowed, took a heap of pictures and watched as her plane left. Since she was ranking recruit she got to be team leader and boss around a bunch of guys, that made her feel good. Now the best part... I wonder if on family day I can get to shoot something full auto, preferably in the .50 cal class!

Great! Reminds me of April 6th when we lost the son (my step son) and he became a sailor! Feels good huh?

As for the getting hands on some ''nice stuff'' - wouldn't hold my breath but - I guess ya never know - dreaming ain't been taxed (yet)

    Been there, ShelJ.

It is a tough and proud moment at the same time. He went to 1 semester of college, came home, and said he didn't want to be in school. Report card came in and pretty much indicated he didn't want to be in school. So, he spent 3 to 4 months working, while the Navy and Marines called every week (they wanted him for their bands).

He ended up spending 5 years in the Navy. Enjoyed some. Hated some.
Trying to teach sailors to march...what a hoot! Some of the stuff done by his DIs (right Navy term?) was hysterical.

With all of that, he came out, went to college, set every curve on every test. He's now teaching H.S. math. (His mother and I wonder where we went wrong!)

Yeah it's tuff to watch them leave, but when you see them the next time. Words don't do justice to what goes through you when you first see them. You are pretty sure that it's the same loved one that left just a short while ago, then at the same time you realize that something is very different. When you get a chance to talk and visit a little, you know that the person that was your "little one" has grown up. That doesn't mean that they still will not need some guidance and support, just you'll do it as with a grownup now.

    Congrats...

I know your pride. When my wife and I dropped our son off (also in Lansing) years ago...after the 'swearing in', we drove about 3 blocks away and we both broke out in tears...it was a tough moment of realization...the apron strings has definitely been cut!
