    Abilene PD's newest Rookie Officer

Monday night was the graduation ceremony for the 10 cadets from the 6 month long Police Academy here in Abilene, Texas.

Our son Scooter was among the cadets graduating, just before that he asked his girlfriend Kelly to marry him. Two big events in a row !

The first picture is Scooter receiving his diploma from APD Chief Melvin Martin. The Chief was a Lieutenant when I went through the APD SWAT team school back in 1982. Jim Berry, the Assistant Chief behind the podium was the Lieutenant in charge of the SWAT team back then. The group on stage to the left are Dispatchers who graduated from their school and were included in the ceremony.

Here is a 'passing of the torch' from one generation to the next..... the old short & wide white haired dude is me pinning my son's badge on him during the ceremony. Sure was a proud moment !

The Cadet to my right receiving his badge in the picture below is a member of this board, hsuCowboy98.

Scooter is now in the 14 week Police Training Officer program, assigned to senior officers who are showing him the ropes on the street. During the next 14 weeks, he will work every shift and every department within the department to get a good overview of how the department works and how the divisions interact with one another. He started Midnight shift Tuesday night.

From the report of his first night's activities, he is learning fast that those folks out roaming the streets during the middle of the night are not Abilene's most upstanding citizens, LOL !

    We're certainly proud.

Passing the torch...great line! Congrats and may God watch over him.

I had a similar, yet very unique situation. I had been on the force for ten years when MY DAD graduated the Academy at age 52, honor grad, the worlds oldest rookie. In uniform, I got to pin his badge on. His training FTO reminded him to salute my Lieutenant's bars! He worked as a Reserve, but piled up the OT on off-duty jobs!

Congratulations! You should be proud to have him as a son and he should be proud to have you as a father....

Congrats to you and Scooter. I've had the good fortune of being ticketed by an Abilene officer while on my way to work (at the AFB). Very professional fellow.

Congrats to all three of you. Make sure they soak up everything they can in FTO, this time is going to fly by and before they know it, they will be on their own.
