Today, September 19th, 2008, marks the third anniversary of the death of SA Sullivan, "Sully" to his friends and colleagues. Sully was a Marine, a Navy Corpsman, a volunteer who helped at-risk youth, and eventually a Special Agent with the Diplomatic Security Service. Coming on with DSS in 2002, he served in the Miami Field Office before volunteering for duty in Afghanistan, and then Iraq.
On 19 SEP 2005, Sully was in a convoy doing advance work for a protective security detail in Mosul, Iraq. A vehicle laden with explosives tried to force its way into the convoy. Sully's vehicle rammed this VBIED and forced it away from the convoy - the ensuing explosion destroyed only Sully's vehicle. Sully died instantly, along with three Blackwater Personal Security Specialists.
Sully was a classmate of mine in the Basic Special Agent's Course, and a friend. He was funny, irreverent, occasionally silly, but always utterly competent. He had been around the world, and experienced much of the worst of human nature. Despite (or perhaps because of) this, he was always able to see the humor in the darkest situations.
I miss Sully - I miss his sea stories, his Boston accent. I miss him busting the chops of our less-than-stellar agents, and I miss busting his chops about his Boston accent, his days as a sailor, and his prematurely gray hair. Mostly, though, I just miss him.
It's well into the 19th here in Baghdad, so I ask you all - tip a glass to Sully tonight, and remember everyone, from every branch, agency and department, who goes into harms way every single day so that others may sleep peaceably in their beds.
To you, Sully….
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
One for Sully tonight, and I'll make it something Irish!
