Dog Lovers & Veterans... something to consider
Military Working Dog adoptions
These are dogs who have done their service, and who are too old or for other reasons are being retired. They may have done one of many jobs from drug detection, explosive detection, security patrols, tracking and rescue, etc. My understanding is that after 3 months of being retired, 'if' they are not adopted they will be euthanised.
However, Bill Clinton signed the bill ending the practice of automatic euthanisation of dogs after all those 'left behind' in Viet Nam, and making it possible to adopt them by civilians. They have to pass a "pet capable test" to be determined adoptable.
They 'can' end up as a great pet and companion, give it a thought if you are considering a dog. The first link shows pics, stories, info, etc

Thats cool, thanks for bringing it up. I have some friends that recently got pulled for dog handler duty for my units next deployment, the dogs are pretty amazing, and while still working dogs, definitely help raise morale. It's good to see that there is a way they can have a life after they EAS too if they can find a loving home.

Already started the process. I've got calls in to all the MWD centers in my area just waiting for a MWD to become available. I personally cannot think of a more nobel thing to do that to give these four legged vets a nice retirement.
