We lost 9 heroes last week.
Thursday night the crew of CG1705, a C-130 Search and Rescue plane responded to a report of an overdue boater. At approximately 7PM all communication was lost with the crew and San Fransisco 911 was flooded with calls about a fireball in the sky near San Clemente island.
The C-130 and a Marine Corps attack chopper collided mid air. The Marine Corps chopper was escorting two transport choppers.
A massive search and rescue effort was launched that included 9 USCG and Navy ships and many USCG and Navy aircraft.
The search lasted from Thursday night till early Sunday morning when the US Coast Guard declared that they would be suspending the rescue effort and would transition to a search and recovery effort.
Here is the information on the 7 Coasties.
*UPDATE* Photos, names released - Search continues for missing air crews
The two Marines were Sam Leigh and Thomas Claiborne.
RIP Brothers and thank you for your service. Please keep the families in your prayers. Semper Fi and Semper Paratus.

I am truly sorry to hear this, and I will add the families of these brave men to my DC list.

Tragic! Mid air collisions never end well. As a former Air Winger, my prayers were sent the day it happened!

I wonder why the 911 calls were routed to San Francisco. Thats a long way away.
