    You can also 'whistle' an acorn top VERY loudly. I learned this as a survival method in the event you didn't bring one. It's so easy, I've taught my 5yr old daughter to do it. Great playground trick too.

    Absolutely. Pine nuts grow here, but you can starve eating them. Squirrels are easier. Over the ridge at Mono Lake the natives ate brine fly maggots. Easy to sieve but probably hard to swallow.

    Millions of Native Americans managed to live largely on Acorns so I'm not so sure that analogy "fits" here
