Now they have to come up with a back pack cell tower . American Indians started the first cell phone type communication ( smoke signals )

That is kinda a cool device

There are solar panels you can add to a backpack, that makes a lot more sense to me than this thing. So panels are lighter than the extra fuel you would carry or that device.

You can tote that stuff if you want to. As for me, I'll just start a fire with whatever I have around me. You know, like sticks or branches or something that burns.

That is very cool. It has huge applicability in the third world, along with micro-finance and digital money.

It's also neat for campers here, if they want to stay connected for any reason.

As usual NPR is full of bravo sierra. This technology was available way back in the mid to late 1980s IIRC> The company that sold a similar device ran ads in Survival Guide magazine (before SG went belly up). At the time the device then for sale was placed on a wood stove or over a candle to generate power for small devices like hand held 2 way radios.

Now that the world is crazy for cell phones this small generator will probably be a great lil money maker.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if/when the SHTF and something like that is really needed, there will not be a network available to connect your phone or tablet to. It may not as important as one may think. JMHO

I think that you are probably correct.

However...in the mean time...as much as I go hiking and camping in the Ozarks, this might not be a bad thing to have.

Seems like it might be useful. All survival / shtf scenarios are not the same.

Nice idea if used properly but I can see a whole bunch of people burning up their resources needlessly.

You're SHTF scenario may not be an entire country's SHTF scenario. It's always good to be prepared.
