Only About Two Months Left to Wait...

In about 2 months here in Central Indiana, the woods will be full of hopeful hunters. A little earlier or later depending on where in the country you hunt. For those of you who have no morel mushroom season.....well, you may want to consider moving!

Are there any dangerous ones that folks may confuse for Morels?

Not likely. Morels have a very distinctive appearance. There are a few other edible types that grow alongside Morels but they are easily discernable. For those who have never hunted such, a Morel looks nothing like what most people know as a mushroom. A Morel looks like this:

There is a black ink pen on the left of the 3rd row of shrooms to give an idea of their size/height.

    I love morels!!

We've got a couple patches on our property that produce most years. Last year was a banner year for us, and we actually had extra that we dehydrated. I've gotten to the point that when I rinse them prior to prep I save the water (and hopefully spores) and pour it back into my woodlot to try and grow more.

Hoping this year will also be a good one.

We have tons of morel patches in the woods around Missouri. A friend of mine lives on a farm down in Arkansas and has a HUGE patch of morels.

He dips them in a batter and freezes them.

When he comes up, he always brings me several bags full.

All I have to do is thaw them out, add some spice, and deep fry them.

And I always use a lot of Louisiana hot sauce.

    Yummmmmmy.

Used to hunt for them when growing up in Indiana with my Grandfather. My Grandmother was so good a cooking them. I miss them. Still have family that lives in Indiana, might have to go up for a visit during Morel season.
