Someday, you might have to eat a Palmetto Bug

or maybe not. If survival came down to eating bugs, could you do it? I'm not sure I could - just bury me with my boots on.

If I was starving to death, I could do it.

But first, I'd pluck off the legs and the wings. YUCK!!!

Patti you're one tough cookie. I'll get one or two of those ugly buggers around here every summer and it never occurred to me to eat one. But I've got a friend down the road that swears that those stupid Spring beetles that we get every year that bang their heads on the windows all night....they're great in a wok and scorched up quick. "Like popcorn" he says. But he learned dietary open minded ness in Nam.

The wings and legs are high-fiber, Patti. Eat up.

"He went on two legs, wore clothes and was a human being, but nevertheless he was in reality a wolf of the Steppes. He had learned a good deal . . . and was a fairly clever fellow. What he had not learned, however, was this: to find contentment in himself and his own life. The cause of this apparently was that at the bottom of his heart he knew all the time (or thought he knew) that he was in reality not a man, but a wolf of the Steppes."

I've smashed them, and they have some sort of snot/glue-like innards.
    Ill pass.

I couldn't. Watching shows like Survivor and Fear Factor when they would eat disgusting things has almost made me lose my lunch on more than one occasion.

I'm much better off learning what wild plants you can eat, that provide nutrition.

Iíll pass although I have eaten ants and grasshoppers. In Thailand Mama-san would give us one Baht for each one of these, they were considered a delicacy.

I'd find an anthill before eating a palmetto bug.

Palmetto bugs skitter around, too. How many calories are in one bug, and how many calories does it take to catch one?

At least with an ant hill you can just stand there, squish one dead in your fingers and eat it, then repeat.

Hm. I'd have to think about it. No doubt, if faced with starvation, I could make do. Heck, ol' Steve McQueen (Papillon) did it, right?

Flying cockroaches just nasty....maybe sauted. When I was a kid we used to put bird seed in our pellet guns and shoot them off the wall of my dad's laundry mat.

I'm sure if I was really hungry I could eat bugs, but I don't know about a palmetto bug... It's basically a giant cockroach...

Mutant cockroaches, paid for by the mama-san, eh?

    It's beyond my experience.
