he is lucky he didn't do this to me or any of my family members. It would have ended with a phone call to the morgue not the police.

Accuracy ALWAYS WINS! So carry what you can hit with.

If you find yourself in a fair fight your tactics stink.

thirty years ago, you could leave your doors unlocked.. though I usually didn't... except that night....

yep, I've done a lot of growin' up since then...

Leonard's mom's response was spot on and made me realize that a handgun was necessary...

I have recently re-acquired my permit to carry weapons. I have had both types in Iowa over the years (Iowa issues professional and non-professional permits). I last had a personal permit about 29 years ago...

But "The times, they are a changin', even here... I've recently told many folks to get a gun... I've told some to get their permits...

Thats why I have dogs...the first line of defense, gives me a buffer to grab my gun and phone. Then go see if the intruder has any limbs left! IMHO!!!

Each situation is unique and that could have gone badly for Leonard's"friend" or you had you shot him. You just hope never to be in a situation that isn't clear-cut one way or another.

Absolutely O.G., the laws haven't changed much in the intervening years... Had I shot him, I might still be paying off a civil debt. But back then, my first perceptions were of my fear and my wish to stop him.. I was terrified... but, I was able to "reason it out" even under the stress of the situation...

I think, had the scene changed a bit... by my having a handgun at the bedside... I might have been justified shooting at a man apparently running right at me (actually staggering right at me) in my bed.

Very true. I wonder if he ever staggerred in anyone's house after your visit or the run-in with Leonard's pistol-packin' mama!
