Please! he didn't have a chance... so he's to expect someone passing him in a public place in the day time(it looked like it) in a place with lots of witnesses is going to come behind him and hold him while 9 people stab him?

I'm pretty sure if I wanted to I could sneak up behind tons of people in the middle of the day.

Yep, there are tons of people who are clueless, but there are also many of us who would not allow you to 'easily' sneak up...I'm just sayin'...

Agreed CTS...That manner of attack was not something most folks could expect.

But he had to have done something pretty bad/stupid/costly to involve an attack/retribution of that sort and in such a public manner.

And suppose 9 people are walking by you. While you're looking at guys 2 through 9, guy 1 is already past you and has his arm around your neck. Maybe the best solution is to not sit in a public place where someone can get behind you easily.

Ditto...Though the option cannot be depended on to be available or even an option (i.e. no PCs stationed near a wall).
This guy was completely oblivious though with ears muffed by a headset and head craned forward face mere inches (!) from the screen.

this was def planned, you can see very little fromt he video but it appeared they walked staggered and casually until the first couple where behind and he was restrained. and then the rest rushed in. I doubt they walked as a single mob of 9

Yeah that, and having a preprogrammed reaction for someone's arm circling your neck from behind. Takes a lot of practice at grappling, but it's possible to do, even seated.

a couple students in my class are always trying to catch me off guard by coming behind me and applying a choke. I think out of a hundred attempts they've managed to do it maybe once, LOL. as soon as I hear a sound or feel the arm coming around or see the shadow I tuck my chin in and duck slightly.
