Hypothetical that actually happened in Co. Springs

You’re standing at a bus stop. There’s one man (Guy A) waiting for the bus and you see another man (Guy B) get out of a car and approach him from behind. Suddenly, Guy B grabs Guy A in a bear hug from behind and starts yelling at him but you can’t make out the words. Guy A turns to fight and draws a handgun and shoots guy B. As guy B falls to the ground he appears to be attempting to pull a gun from his waist band so Guy A shoots again.

    How do you respond ?

Good answers and now for the rest of the story,

On February 22 2006 CSPD Detective Jared Jenson spotted a Parolee, named Jeremy Lambert who was wanted for attempted murder at a bus stop at the corner of Costilla and Hancock streets ( Now the site of Jared Jensen Park). Jensen radioed in that he was going to contact Lambert. Four minutes later CSPD began receiving “shots fired” calls.

Witnesses said that Jensen grabbed Lambert from behind, Lambert fought back, drew a handgun and shot Jensen. Then, Lambert walked up to Jensen and shot him again killing him.

Jensen wasn’t in uniform and there were some conflicting reports as to whether or not he identified himself as a police officer while attempting to arrest Lambert.

Lambert was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 96 years in prison

You don’t know what you don’t know and that’s why always say I wouldn’t get involved

ETA The reason Lambert was only convicted of second degree murder is because the first shot was seen as semi self defense because there was reasonable doubt that he knew Jensen was a Police Officer) the second shot is what fryed him because that was murder no matter who he was shooting at.

    ^^^^This.

Guy B (who did the grabbing) may have been an undercover cop. Guy A (if he's a criminal) may decide that he doesn't want you being a witness. Or, being a total stranger, he could shoot you next for whatever random "reason" he sees.

EDIT: I posted this before I read what the deal was.

So I guess I would have survived!

I would have gotten out of the way. I don't know why B grabbed A, and A may have been justified in performing the act of SD. I might have done the same in that sit. By your OP, I don't see any reason to intervene other than call 911. It really sounds like the detective made a judgmental error in attempting to detain this guy unassisted.

I'm going to see how fast I can run and dial 911...I may be old, but I'm leaving as fast as I can.

I do not ride the bus. So I have no reason to be at the bus stop. Problem solved.

Ok, just another facet of this horrible situation. Let's say you did draw and the detective hadn't been put out of commission with the first shot. The officer is now dealing with TWO men with guns----good way to get yourself shot by either one of them!
