One evening, I was on my way to work (3rd shift) at around 2230 or so, when I saw the strangest thing:
Two young men around the age of 18-22 facing down an alley. One had a camcorder, and the other had...
Now, the "gun" didn't have any orange tip that I could make out, these kids were on a well traveled semi-urban street, and were oblivious to anyone passing by them, all of which suggests that they may have been simply filming some scene for a home movie or such. Or they might have been filming a crime.
Some people really are that stupid.
Anyhoo, I called the local PD and reported the scene, gave my personal info and continued on towards work. I never got any calls or requests to testify, so I assume that it was my first assumption, but I still continued to think about what could have happened:
1. If I had been on foot, I might have taken different steps. Stayed out of sight, called PD, waited until better grasp of situation had been procured, and taken action as/if necessary.
2. If someone who was armed but without training, experience, or knowledge had happened upon that scene, things could have been REALLY bad...
3. Insert likely outcome here...
If it had been a true crime in progress, the brazen nature simply wouldn't have shocked me, most of the folks in my neighborhood just aren't that bright or subtle. What did shock me was the vast and incalculable stupidity of these "film school wannabes"...
I would have loved to have stopped and yelled at those morons for a while, but the "donuts needed making" and without further intel on the situation, I could have been walking into a "dead end". In my not so humble opinion, this was a job for ONLY the LEOs...

It doesn't sound like they were up to any charitable work. Walking down an alley with a gun shown and a camera...wait a minute, they could have been filming a "Cops" episode.

As a watcher of movies, I can tell you for a fact that red tips on movie weapons really throws believeability out the window. To their prospective, what you did by calling the cops on them is eerily similar to when a Wal-Mart shopper calls the cops on someone who is open-carrying. It's all a matter of prospective I guess. To me, the camera is a giveaway. Maybe they should have had on Filmmaker Badges :)

I hear ya. Teenagers run around my neighborhood with air-soft guns. They've been doing it for years, and I don't get any damage reports to the HOA, so I assume they're just shooting each other.
It keeps me on my toes, though.

That has been known to happen, some years a group of teens broke into a house undergoing renovation and taped themselves doing thousand of dollars of damage. Then to showcase their prowess at videography they posted it online. Fortunately they were caught and the tape was used to convict the criminals.
Or they might have been filming a crime.
When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

Yep cause a guy with a gun in a holster in a Walmart is very similar to 2 guys in an alley at night one guy with a video cam and the other holding a gun.Unless you can read minds you really have no idea what they are really doing
