Came home from work today and my door was wide open! No sign of forced entry so I drew my gun and did a room to room search. Tunrs out one of my kids forgot to close the door when they left for school.

It happened to me once, seems we forgot to deadbolt it and the wind blew the front door open (we're pretty sure, coz it does blow open if you forget to lock it) - we don't normally use the front door so I guess hubbs forgot to check it.
I let the 4-leggers do the investigating about that

Glad that it turned out to be nothing. Had you ever practiced clearing your house before? Now that you have had some time to think about it, would you change any of your tactics?

that happened to me once till I figured out my border collie was opening my sliding glass door with her teeth (Ya really happened) boy the first couple of times freaked me out, but then i realized if you pushed on the door it would come unlatched and then you could pull open. Couldnt get that fixed quick enough.

How old are the kids? They need to understand a few rules about HD...and quickly!OMO

I had a Black & Tan hound once, named Elmer (Fudd) no less, that learned to open the front door and let himself in. We had to start locking it to keep him out (Yes, it was that far back when folks didn't have to lock doors!). He promptly learned to ring the door bell. We had to disconnect it. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?
Thieves generally don't pick door locks. If it's open and the jam isn't splintered, you're probably okay. But it's good that you took some precautions.

kids are 14 and 16 so they know better! so I thought. Belive me I thanked them for cause'n me some extra stress! I would have called 911 if there was any sign of forced entry.
Get this. I moved into an apartment. Has two doors. One on front and one on back. (what I call front and back anyhow). Lived in the apartment for over a year. Took couple trips out of town, one for few days, one for about a week. Then one day discovered that one of the doors (the back door) that I don't much, the button latch was not catching in the plate in the door frame, so anyone at anytime could have pushed it open. While I was thinking all along that it was locked. I had to dremmel the latch a little so it would click in as it should.
Someone could have come in any time day or night when I was home, or out of town and could have cleaned me out, or worse. Shew I was shocked when I discovered it. I always pushed the door shut and locked it, but never pulled to see if it came back open. It felt like it closed all the way.

Call the cops next time. Nothing like some back up to keep you safe.
I practice the 2nd Amendment....alot
I did a room to room clear of the house last week. Just because the screen door was open lol Wife and I can laugh about it now....but I just love how well we click. Pull up to the house, see screen door open, look at each other and she automatically says "girls, stay in the car". I leave it running, for her, and get out to go check the house. she hops over to driver seat. She knows that if something happens to get my girls out of there first....then call 911.
