Unfortunately for us, usually home invasions happen so fast as one member pointed out here that in most cases if your not already carrying your chances of retrieving a firearm are slim at best.
We can only use precautionary measures to our advantage to keep would be individuals who would do us and our family members harm from entering our castle. That being said, we must train ourselves to react to unusual and unexpected circumstances with an immediate plan which should be pre-developed and understood well by all family members.

I've got 2 female cats. An older large cat and a kitten several months old (less than a third of the size of the older one). They crack me up. The dynamics between the two are interesting. Between the two cats and having two kids (9 and 2), there's never a dull moment.
I've got flood lights around the entire exterior of my house that I can turn all on with one switch in the center of the house. There is actually one point in my house 10 feet from that spot that I can see every main level exterior door (not the basement) and I can see the door leading to the basement in a mirror from that spot. For me, something like that, I'm sending the wife and kids to our bedroom, grabbing the 12 ga, hitting the flood lights, and standing in my see all spot. Cool thing is, the island in the kitchen serves as quick cover in that spot as well. I'm not venturing outside. There have been some 350lb+ bears spotted and photographed within a half mile of my house this year by a buddy of mine...saw the pics on his trail cam. If there's anything in the trash cans they want, they can have it without me going out there.
