    Selling something on CraigsList

I had an item for sale on CraigsList. I listed my cell phone number as a contact number. Earlier today, someone texts me and asks if it is still for sale. I text yes. He texts back he will buy it and asks for my address and a convenient time to stop by. I was out shopping so I text 5 pm. (No address given). He texts fine and again asks for my address. When I get home (which was about 3 pm) I text him the address.

I was thinking, this was rather risky. I had a previous ad and the guy called me. On the phone he sounded like a gang banger and serendipitously, the item "just sold". With this guy, it was all done via texting. Granted, that is the new communication style, but a lot can be garnered via listening to the way a person speaks.

So I was playing out scenarios in my head. I was looking out the window awaiting his arrival. What if he appeared with some friends and was a gang banger type? I would call 911 and inform them that there is "suspicious activity" outside my house and please stand by and listen. I would not let him in. If he asks why just say that I am not comfortable. Same as if he arrived alone and looked the same way.

As it turned out, he appeared and my spidey senses did not go off. He looked at the item, no negotiating, paid for it and left without incident.

However, I do not think I would ever do it this way again. Speaking to the person on the phone gives you a sense as to whether there is risk or not.

I think that AZChevy gave the best advice on these (Craig's List). Be armed and have an armed backup.

I was, of course, and a bit extra. Unfortunately, I live alone and my cats truly would be of no assistance.

9-1-1 is for immediately life threatening energencies. It is not a security service.

If you are not prepared to have unknown parties come to your house to look at the item, find a nice very public place to meet them. Maybe a place like a police station parking lot. Either that or sell it through a consignment shop.

Well, if you had say 3 gangbangers outside your door, would that not be immediately life threatening?

I was just thinking out loud and running through some possible scenarios. I am not that experienced and was looking for maybe a better way to handle the situation.

I love this forum for ideas because everyone contributes and I come up with a better plan. I am just saying for next time, I will not be doing the whole communication thing via text, opting for a phone call so I can hear the potential buyer.

I guess I don't know what a "gang banger" sounds like, and it seems like you may be making unfair judgement calls about folks here. Why would a thug call about an item and make an appointment to see it and then rob you? I guess that just doesn't make sense to me. I agree with mcp, if you have lots of thugs in Portland, Oregon and it makes you that uncomfortable having folks come to your place of residence then just tell them that your place is hard to find and to come to the nearest landmark.

We always meet buyers or sellers in a public place and both my wife and I go armed. I do not know about how often bad things happen with Craig's List encounters but why take a chance.

My wife and I have sold dogs on Craigslist. No issues, but we are both armed and a neighbor is watching.

i'd say if a person thinks they need a swat team to sell a $50 piece of crap, they should just stay off of CL and just donate it and use as a tax write off, i buy/sell on CL and i have met people at my house, in public and at thier house, if it's at my place, i meet em outside, WHERE EVERYBODY CAN SEE US, just the other day, a young lady who was about 4mos along, came to my house to buy a breast pump (it was my wifes) i met her outside, we chatted, she looked at it, gave me the $$ and left, she has no idea what the inside of house looks like or what is in it AND she really has no leg to stand on if she were to say that i tried to (fill in the blank)_________ her. yes, use your brain and your SA just like any other time, but try not to over think ther selling of your old TV

Do not let them in your house/garage/outbuilding/shop/guest house/backyard. If taking the item to a public place is not possible, meet them at the street with the item in question.

If the item is too large to be moved easily by one person, move it to a space where it can be publicly viewed before you post the advertisement.

After that just apply common sense, SA and keep you gun on your belt. Back up is preferred, but some times not possible.

I had a guy from CL who wanted to swap his dirt bike for my street bike, it sounded like a good deal to me. He volunteered to haul his up from the city and do the trade here. He showed up in a car with no trailer or dirt bike. This was pre-CCW but I was on my property and armed. I was suspicious that he was "casing" me, as he showed up without the trade bike, so I took his picture and one of his car and plate. He didn't seem to like that. Too bad. He never got back to me and I sold the street bike. I have had dozens of CL transactions, most went smoothly with nice people, a few people were kinda strange, but no complaints here. Like the Scouts say, be prepared
