All too often I find myself asking, "why do we, as a collective, tolerate and put up with this, along with the crime and other stuff that goes along with it?"
I don't mean tolerate as in the bleeding heart liberal stance either. The fact is that many of these areas are beyond redemption. The inhabitants are much like the tribes in the nations responsible for most international terrorism: they can't be reasoned with, they can't be educated, you can't appease them, you can't appeal to their "good side".

Here's my guess on this case. Young teens, girls.

are part of a gang, or they have older siblings who are... and for whatever reason they were angry at the 12 year old, maybe she said "gangs are stoopid, I ain't joining no gang"

Now the gang has shown that they will support their own even when they're wrong... and the gang always protects their own... and they don't make you go to school or do the dishes or nuttin'! So, the gang is "better than fambly!"

And that is how it starts.

5 years down the road, when the girl who made that phone call to the lieutenant is a dead crack-head professional escort who is found dead in an alley, if the gang hears about it (and isn't directly responsible for her death for failure to pay her procurer or some such (the lieutenant)), they will attend the funeral in full colors.

The Gang has got your back... cradle to grave...

    And that's how it ends.

So, the moral of the story is...

If you live in an urban area where there are gangs in your neighborhood or close (=every urban area north of the mason dixon and many south of it.):

    1. Have a variety of arms to protect your home and teach everybody in your home how to use them.
    2. Always carry. ALWAYS (at home, on the couch, at dinner, ALWAYS).
    3. Always have enough spare money in the bank to move (first and last month's rent at least).

While you are there... live frugally and save every penny you can to buy a house where you don't have to worry (so much) about whether the attack will come today or tomorrow (you may wait a few years before it gets to you "out here").
    It could be worse.

What you think is only a battle, gun or otherwise, may turn into a war.

That is what is one of the scariest things to me, is we have full grown men running around this country with the mindset of rebellious pre-teens. There is no reasoning with them. They are extremely outspoken and but will not tolerate someone speaking wrong to them. They are always looking for a fight, usually an unfair one. And it just keeps growing and growing, spreading and spreading, all over the country. They take in children and turn them into bangers that will carry out their "leaders" wishes without hesitation. And it's all just getting worse and worse...

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Not just a few of these "full grown men" started off as bangers themselves. They
"got into a little home-town jam
... put a rifle in his hand
Sent him off to a foreign land"
    (With apologies to "The Boss")

And there, in the armed forces of the good ol' US of A; they learned tactics, they learned how to recruit, they learned weaponry, and they learned how to kill with no remorse.

Once back, they became "officers" in a different "band of brothers," and share what they have learned and put it to use. Fortunately, for the most part, this knowledge is spent on rival gangs (the enemy)... and not the rest of us...

Some though, are bringing their personal wars out onto the streets where real people are... victims.

Is it really getting worse and worse? I don't know.

About half of firearm homicides in Canada in 2008 were gang related. according to one study. In another, Green Bay, Wisconsin LE agencies came up with 40 gangs in the city with a total membership about 562 (this was spring 2010) and were fretting that GB might soon be as bad as Milwaukee.

I do know this... Back in Jr High I lived in a decent neighborhood in Chicago... the public school I attended was not in my good neighborhood. It sometimes took me an hour to get home and I only lived 4 blocks away. My parents couldn't understand why I was so scared of the kids in my school, but moved me to a private school anyway. Two weeks after I changed schools, the downstairs neighbor kids were walking to my old school wearing black arm bands... I asked why...

2 other kids and their parents were beaten to death with a baseball bat(one parent survived in the hospital in a vegetative state). Why? Because one of the kids had heard some gang members on the school playground talking about a planned robbery, and told a teacher, who reported it to the police.

Some of the bangers were caught. Somehow the bangers found out who the snitches were, and took retaliation on the family... The kids(you ask)? The kids were in 3rd and 5th grade. The school was only K-8... The oldest bangers who committed the murders were in 8th and 9th grade.

    So, I don't really think it's worse... a bit more widespread. . .

I don't think that there are that many more gangs, but there are now mega gangs, with almost a corporate structure.

Back in the day if someone had a beef with you, he ran you down in the neighborhood, you fought.... nobody else got involved they just watched. No matter who won, 9 times out of 10 you shook hands and became friends or at the very least no longer enemies. Nobody ran home to get a bunch of their friends, nobody ran home to get a weapon.... they was more respect, honor, and integrity back then.... Tommy Lee Jone's character said it best in No Country for Old Men: But I think once you quit hearing "sir" and "ma'am," the rest is soon to foller.

I think that depends on the location and what "back in the day" means. I hit the streets of East L.A. in the mid 60's. We had twenty to thirty gangs and they were fighting, clubbing, stabbing and shooting almost every chance they got.
