    Under attack.... One good shot

A few months ago, I convinced my brother to get his concealed handgun license and it's a good thing he did. Someone approached him with a brick and threatened to hit him if he didn't hand over his wallet. He brandished his trusty Sig and the guy took off. The question/scenario is this: if you had to fire at someone and had no choice but to do so and you had one very good shot at the attacker, where would you aim? Go for a better chance at a mass shot to the chest? Go for the head? I know the shot may not go where you aim, but where would you aim?

I would go for a center mass shot. With all the adrenaline pumping and nerves on edge it's just seems like a safe bet to go for the largest target. I practice center mass shots and head shots at least 2-3 times a month at the range and can make them with ease, but the little green man on the paper is not trying to kill me. If I was super ninja cool I would make the first shot to the pelvic girdle. That would drop him where he stands and is a larger target then the head/ brain stem shot and no chance of him getting to me before be bled out and went into shock.

you should be shooting until the threat is stopped, rare is a 1 shot stop, that is only on TV, I would keep shooting until the attacker is not attacking anymore.

Yes I'm being a wise ... but the shot always goes where you aim.
Just that it may not be where you thought you were aiming.

    That aside, COM.

Not everyone can shoot like John McClane. Shoot COM until the treat is stopped.

I train to shoot bursts of 3-5, shooting to the biggest target first going to the smaller. If COM doesn't put them on the ground shoot burst to the face. This is why I like to carry as many rounds on board as I can. If there is more than one BG each would get a burst COM them go back to those still standing.

I was always taught to shoot for the largest target available. In 99.9% of cases that is going to be center mass.

I'm going with COM but I don't know why I would limit myself with one shot. I'm going to be in "full go mode" until the threat is neutralized. Some say to do 2 shots COM + 1 head shot. I think this is a good option if you're confident in your skills and the risk of hitting innocent bystanders isn't too great if you try to do this, etc.

Shooting for center of mass (COM) is the logical target. It's your best bet for scoring a hit, and if you do hit, usually a bullet will tumble and bounce off of things. EMTs will tell you that the exit wound from a handgun round is rarely opposite from the entry point.

If you can land one or two shots in the COM, they'll probably zip and zag around in there a bit, causing considerable mischief along the way. At the range, I always try to make time for running the "El Presidente" drill.
