Personally, I applaud. Were my wife outside when I heard gunshots going off I'd be out the door with my shotgun in a heartbeat to locate and secure her.

Say you're a good witness to this event. The OP said neighbors were involved in the shootout. This wasn't some basic self-defense shooting, it was simply a shootout as far as I can tell. Now you can rat out your neighbors in court. Say they send the perps to jail. Now you have angry neighbors who know you were a witness who helped put cousin Vinnie in jail. What does that do for your continued safety?
Apparently I skipped a line. I don't applaud that part. I'd secure her, then get the heck out of dodge.
I certainly can see the pshychology of the decison to go outside reacting to "what the?" when you heard shots. I agree with the comments that staying inside would be the better play. Glad you are OK.

If your house is poorly constructed, it still offers concealment, and some cover, especially from a handgun. Do you have a basement? Maybe a room you can reinforce with some heavy furniture or bookcases? (books do a good job of stopping bullets - you can get them used real cheap)
It's bad enough that CC permit holders have been put in a bad light recently in the media with all that's going on in Florida and the SYGL relation; now we have own members of our community pointing fingers and ignoring the fact that the OP stated that his son had just recently stepped out and he was worried that he may have been involved. I do not agree with the choice to run outside in search of him, but I can certainly sympathize with it. I do not think that he was, nor is it apparent that he was, out for blood.Quote:
