This isn't an appropriate topic of DC which doesn't allow non gun politics. Now, that being said, I was a victim of this in 1994. The only thing that worked in my favor was the kid who tried to drop me was about 5" shorter than me and placed a bad hit. Being naturally hard headed, I'm betting he broke one or two of his fingers, and I got a small split above my right eye that was more of a nuisance than painful. I was walking down a sidewalk in Dallas on Commerce when a group of about 6 kids decided I was a good target.
It's easy to critique sitting in the comfort of my own home, but having actually gone through it, it happens too fast to prepare for it. Do I avoid large groups of teenage/young men today when I'm walking? Not really as it's sometimes just not possible. Do I keep my wits about me when I do walk by them? Yeah, my SA is pegged on Full. Do I have my wife walk behind and to my right when we go by groups- something avoidable in large cities like Chicago and NYC? Yeah, I do. I don't walk down alleys even if it's a huge shortcut and I always CC now.
But, at no point would I ever say that this guy should have known better.
