Attemped home invasion at my house last night!

Ok, so here is what happened, followed by what I have learned from this experience.

I had just laid down about 3:30 AM from reading when I heard a loud bang coming from my 10 year old son's room. The bad guy had apparently tried to break out the window with his bare hands. I jumped up and grabbed my pistol and ran down the stair to his room. I am not sure if my feet even touched the steps on the way down. The house was completely dark. The first thing I see is a shadow coming around the stairwell. It was my son. He was awakened by it, and came to tell me that he had seen a big man standing outside his window. I ran into his room and covered the window. My wife turns on our bedroom light and the hall lights and the perp gets scared and runs into the night. We called the law right about that time. My wife suggested I go outside to investigate in case he was breaking into the shed to steal. I told her that stuff could be replaced, and that I was staying in the house where we were safer, so that I could make sure her and the boys were protected. I just let the police do what they do, which is police. The police arrived on scene about 5 minutes after the call was made. We saw him through the window scoping the place out, circling the house for about 5 more minutes before he came to the door. As soon as I saw the police car outside the house, I put away my gun(wouldn't want to be confused for the bad guy.) After the cops came and took the report, we went outside and found a large hand print on my son's window.

What I have learned from this experience:

1. I now have no doubt whatsoever that I can do what needs to be done in a self defense situation. I always thought I could, but you never know until you are in that situation for the first time.

2. I need to get my CCW Permit Asap. I have already been planning on this pronto, but it just underlines the need.

3. The adrenaline dump phenomenon is real, and it's hard to shake even after the threat is gone.

4. I need lots of training. My son coming inbetween me and the bad guy really underscored this for me, especially since I couldn't see him at first. I am thankful that I had the forethought to not draw down on him by accident.

5. I need a good security system ASAP.

6. God is watching over me and my family.

Glad you all are safe. Flashlight always next to my bed. Bedroom door locked to give me that extra few secs, and a Dog in the hallway (Great alarm is a great Dog) If I had kids I'd wanna train the dog to stay near my kids room... Seems like you did a great job!

Train as a family with emphasis on communication. It's only a good plan when everyone in the house understands it and has it well rehearsed.

Great job. Staying in the house was very smart as well as letting the police do their job. You're right in that "things" can be replaced. Better to stay safe. I'm really glad it worked out for you!!!

Thanks y'all. It really has got me thinking. I work some really long hours in the oil field. I was supposed to be working last night, but there was problems with the well. I've been wondering if it would have turned out different if I wasn't there last night to protect them. My wife and I are wanting to go get our CCW Permits together.

Personally as a parent, I have never liked home designs in which the kid's room is on a different floor or
a different part of the home. Not only that, the child is sleeping on the lower level, the part with easier access
for a BG, Not a good arrangement.

There may be nothing you can do about the arrangement, but you can put glass break detectors on all your windows,
perhaps plant some thorny bushes outside your son's window to discourage anyone from approaching, and
increase your exterior lighting.

I would imagine your son is probably as shook up by this as you are. Consider finding a way for him to sleep
upstairs near you for a few nights, or you moving downstairs for a few nights, until everyone calms down.

Also (if at all possible) get a dog to sleep in the same room with your son. The dog provides a sense of security for the child
and real early detection for everyone.

Question for you. Was that loud bang from the visitor trying to break in or from your son fleeing the room? Do you know? If it was the visitor trying to break in, is there anything you know of that might have caused him to
change his plans? Do you have triple pane glass or security film. Were you merely lucky he moved on?

How about exterior foot prints? Were any found in the morning when the sun came up? Did the police come back to check on that? Did you think to check on that?

I am glad you and your family are safe. By not chasing the bad guy you didn't give him a second opportunity to hurt someone. We recently had a break in in our town and the homeowner chased the intruders outside and that is when they shot him. I am new to owning a firearm and have attached a very bright flashlight to the rail of my gun. I did this so I could blind any intruders and second so I could see who I am pointing my gun at to avoid shooting someone in my family that is wandering about the house. Hopefully this is a good plan. I need to get a big bad dog......

Very glad you and the family are OK. Especially like your priorities, in that family is to be protected, and stuff is stuff.

I agree. Unfortunately, this house was one the better ones, in one of the better areas when we were looking. The problem is that this area is booming right now because of the oil field. We have all kinds of people moving in, and not all of them are good. Rentals are hard to come by, and there is a waiting list for them. Prices are double what they are back home, but we moved out here to get work. The rental agreement doesn't allow for dogs. I would love to have me a big old dobie dog, but that isn't going to work for right now. It will have to wait till we can buy a house. We've been shopping for security systems today. I am hoping we can get a good one soon. In the meantime, I am moving downstairs, and the kids are moving up to the master bedroom. At least that will put me inbetween them and any bad guys. You are right about my son too. He was very shook up. My oldest never even woke up, even when the officer came inside to look around. Lol

In the meantime you can install a sheet of clear polycarbonate also called LEXAN - NOT to be confused with common PlexiGlas on the window in your kids room.

That will help you and your kid sleep better.

You can carefully drill it along the edges and use screws and washers to install it right over your existing glass window.

Search for a sheet of it in a large enough size on Ebay. Prices will be all over the place.

Stuff comes and goes. I've had money. I've been broke. As long as I have my health and my family, everything else will work out ok.
