Interesting Advice
Just read some interesting advice concerning home defense ammo choice.
Note: Home Defense
The author recommended the first 3 or 4 rounds should be hollow point with the remaining rounds FMJ.
His rationale was that if you miss with the first few, the BG might dive for cover, in which case the FMJ rnds could still eliminate the threat
behind a wall or couch or whatever.
This did get me thinking; no conclusions yet, but it does seem to make sense other than the obvious that a stray one could go thru a wall and into your neighbors home/apt.
What say you all?

I'd rather prefer JHPs/HPJs since I live in an apartment and excess penetration is a major concern. FMJs, depending on the caliber, will even go through the assailant's body and end up also hitting innocents.
-
Ive heard that called a "polish loading" before.
Ill be sticking with HP's.

Re: Interesting Advice
I alternate: JHP FMJ JHP FMJ. But that's just me...
Do what you think is right.

Had an experienced firearms trainer tell me the same thing, too. His point was that it might be necessary to penetrate a barrier such as a car window.

HP's will still go through walls and couches - no difference there. Hollowpoints at least have the opportunity to expand and, with some, cut flesh as opposed to FMJ that will simply slip past most tissue creating smaller than caliber holes in elastic tissue.

Re: Interesting Advice
So what are State Troopers who use 357Sig using? Theoretically.

Just use a good HP that will penetrate barriers.

Not sure if you meant to post a link or not...but nothing was there referencing the article.
I don't do this. Hollowpoints are better - in my opinion. If I am shooting at someone who is behind cover - then I probably have time to back up a little and grab my rifle or shotgun instead of relying solely on my pistol. There are so many unknowns and variables....you can't expect to plan out exactly how things will happen and then be right and everything works out great. Just try to be reasonably prepared.

I once talked to a guy at the range who had his first 3 rnds frangibles, the next 5 jhp's and the rest of the mag fmj's, for defense.

If you miss the BG with the first 3-4 shots, chances are one or the other of you will beat feet, negating any need to change ammo type.
