It's like watching a college football game where the other team ran a poorly designed Hail Mary, so now our coach keeps calling a blitz play after play in hopes that the opposing team will call another Hail Mary. Even on a 1st and 10 with 13 min left in the quarter. Hell, even after they took out the quarterback and let the center just stand up with the ball. Okay, even if the other team left the field and all said they'd rather play baseball.
They've always done that here... the usher makes their rounds up and down the isle every half hour or so and they normally hang out in the back watching the movie.
It doesn't seem to me at all that that is a physical security move. I think they are just protecting their revenue from movie-sneakers.
I used to be an Usher here in CO when I was younger. Our duties were to make sure no horse play or talking was going on, make sure the picture and sound was acceptable, make sure no one was hoping from screen to screen, or under ag people getting in to R movies. Then in between movies we were to clean up. Then after hrs, make sure no one was hiding out behind the screen or other hiding places. I doubt they are telling their ushers to be security per say, but after the shootings I am sure the ushers are told to make sure to look for anything unusual.

Before the batman event in some theaters chains such as "Celebration" I have seen this, where the usher will troll the room, some such as GKC not so much.
It basically depends on the area, theater size, popularity of the movie, and how many manage to sneak in the exit during the show.
I have as of late seen them escort out those messing with their cell, are bein a problem, or are being rude, a good thing....
I go to the movies a couple of times a year where I live in Maine and Regal has a small two by two sign saying no firearms allowed.
