I asked about this scenario of our CH class instructor who is an active officer. He advised to secure your children first. Choose a place to stand your ground with your family behind you. Stand in front of their door and wait for bad guy to come to you. This way, you know your bullets will not stray. Just as learning fire safety, they can learn what to do whenever the code word is enacted if practiced enough.
He also suggested to keep a flashlight in your gun safe.

Hmm, her point was that if I came back to the locked bedroom door she should have some way to know for sure it was me and to know whether I was under duress. Made sense to me.

Makes sense to me, too, but many others around here disagree with the concept of code words between spouses.

We just kept it simple. We have one phrase meaning everything really is ok, anything else means don't open the door.

I had a similar incident.....get some emergency night lights that stay plugged in but only come on when the power is interrupted/cut.
Have yourself a good day there sir.
