My normal (day in-day out) technique is to shoot the gun out of his hand, unless it's a really nice one like a Wilson Combat 1911.
It's really not that hard. I watched Roy Rogers and Gene Autry do it a thousand times when I was a kid. You just clear leather and shoot one-handed from the hip.
If somehow he got a round off, I would shoot the bullet itself while in flight

Center mass and if you are not sure about the BG's condition or where is firearm might be and the threat may still be real, center mass again. You have stopped the threat and have not hurt the BG's hand.

It's not a coincidence that in movies and TV cop shows, the good guys are are made to look bad. When's the last time there was an episode which involved a citizen with a concealed handgun license? When was the last time there was an episode of a civilian taking out a bad guy with a legally licensed firearm and if there was such an episode, where the civilian with a gun was not made to look a kook vigilante?
