Why not shoot the gun out of his hand????
Last evening my wife and I were watching a police drama. A very distraught man is in a public park and a police office demands to see his hands. The man shows his hands and has a handgun in one of them. He immediately points it at a group of kids and the office rightfully shoots him in the chest 3 times killing him. The next words that came out of my wife's mouth not only shocked me but made me believe everything I've tried to teach her for the last 5 years has been for nothing. She actually said, "Why didn't he just shoot the gun out of his hand?" I tried to explain stopping the threat and shooting center mass but if she hasn't been listening in the past I have no real reason to believe she understood what I was saying. I'm at a loss.

Sounds like she's been watching too many 70s cop/detective shows like Mannix and what was that other one? With the bald fat guy?

I saw a video of a crazed, armed person in a park who a cop shot the revolver out of his hand to successfully disarm the situation.
He used a scoped rifle to do so though (looked like an R700/M40).

Cannon - played by bald, fat William Conrad.
And speaking of fat guys, my favorite "you gotta be kidding" scene is where noted Hollywood hypocrite Ed Asner plays a police detective. He shoots a guy out of a high tower about 50 yards away - with a J-frame snub. R-i-i-i-g-h-t.
