    Could have been more

Let me start this story by saying I am waiting on my concealed permit to come in the mail so for now I open carry wherever it is legal for me to do so..Now on to the story..

I work 3rd shift at a manufacturing plant that is not exactly in the best of areas, and I get off at 7am. I am a smoker and my job is a smoke-free enviroment. I used to go to a gas station right up the road from work, but one day (before I had my firearm) I was approached by a man who asked me for a cigarette. I gave him one just so that he would go away and not bother me anymore, well once he got the cigarette he began acting aggressive so I put my cigarette out and got in my car and left before the situation escalated more than it already had. Since that day when I get off I now go to a food-lion (open parking lot by a main road) to smoke..Since that altercation I never go anywhere without my firearm (as long as I am legally allowed to carry).

This morning I needed gas so I made the decision to go to the gas station where the first incident occurred due to it being the closest and most convienant, before getting out of the car I strapped on my XDm in a OWB blackhawk holster (at about 9 o'clock on my waist) and began pumping gas. As I was pumping I noticed a man walking around the parking lot almost aimlessly, at the time I didnt think much of it. I finished up my transaction and pulled away from the pump to the side of the parking lot closest to the road to smoke. I am sitting on my hood messing with my phone when out of the corner of my eye I see a man standing just outside arms length away from me. I turn my shoulders and stand up, so that I am standing square with him and he begins acting really nervous and scratching at his arms. I asked him why he approached me and he began stuttering very nervously and all he could get out was "Do you have the time.." I said sure and told him it was 7:12, and he walked away pretty quickly.

I'm not sure what his intentions were, but from the way he reacted when I squared my body with his and my firearm was in plain view I doubt he had anything good in mind. This situation really made me realize that I need to keep a better awareness of what is going on around me. This could have easily gone sour, but I am just glad that the view of my firearm was enough to deter him from doing anything more than asking for the time. I do not pick sides in the argument of Open carry VS. concealed carry but I can honestly say that if I had been concealed carrying the situation may not have turned out as harmlessly..

If y'all have any advice please feel free to let me know. I am still new to this and would love to hear how y'all would have handled this situation.

Yes, quit smoking before something really bad happens.

Why do people smoke at gas stations?

Two days ago I was getting gas and a open top Jeep Wrangler pulled up with four yutes in it. Driver gets out and starts pumping gas while the yute in the back, directly over the gas tank is burning one. Apparently the driver was not smart enough to realize that a lit cigarette 18" from where he is pumping gas is not a great idea.

The kid did put it out when I pointed out that he could easily become a Darwin award winner and take out a lot of us out with him.

If you are getting out of work in a not so good area maybe you should consider going to a gas station that is in a little better area? That was twice in a row you have been approached at that station. It sounds to me like the last one was in the need of a fix by the way he was scratching his arms.

I think you handled the first situation very well. as far as the second, your situational awareness was focused on your phone, not on your surroundings...bad idea. If he had bad intentions, and was not hesitant you would have been in some serious trouble. His hesitation was your saving grace IMO. Next time, if you need to smoke a gas s6tation parking lot that may be detroimental to your existence, save the phone for a later time and keep your eyes ears and attention focused on your surroundings. I dont say this to be mean or negative.... Myself and others here have served in combat, Law enforcement, etc...and know first hand the value of maintaining your situational awareness.

What he said. I quit smoking after 35 years by dipping. It's cheaper and I don't spit, so no mess.

I'm assuming you pulled straight into the parking spot and were sitting on your hood with your back to the guy? I try to have my back to as few people as possible--sometimes you can't help having people behind you (like at a restaurant, at the mall, standing in line at the gas station, etc.). However, my mom always said to me, "God gave you a neck for a reason!" Keep your head and eyes moving--not necessarily like Jason Bourne or a scared caged animal, but like a watchful and careful individual with common sense awareness.

I echo the person who suggested finding another gas station. 2x with these kind of scenarios would be enough for me to travel elsewhere.

If you do stop smoking, think of all the ammo that $ could go towards...we complain when we have to pay $0.30-$0.40/round of ammo but some guys won't mind paying $0.25-$0.30/smoke...

I have this toolbar app which gives me the savings run-down to date, based on $5/pack cigarettes:

And get a quality kydex holster for that dip too. lol8.gif

Someone on another forum made this. I might have to make one for myself just to get a good "eye roll" from the wife.

Smoking is more likely to kill you than a BG... unless those smokes get sneaky and team up with the BGs by consistently driving you into high threat areas where you are distracted and have limited SA. Looks like they may be working on that coordination.

This should be a wakeup for you. The guy was an arm's length away before you even realized he was there. If he was a bit more decisive and aggressive and had a knife, a stick, a roll of quarters, or just a good right hook, that's too close for you to get drawn and on-target before you were out of the fight permanently.

My first advice would be to kick the smokes, but if not, at least find a safe place to light up.
