It Finally Happened and Lessons Learned

Last night, my wife was waiting for me to get off work to meet her for dinner. She had my two boys with her (ages 9 & 11). She decided to go to Target and pulled into the parking lot. There was a man in a vehicle a few spots down who waited for her to park and exit the vehicle. He got out of his vehicle and quickly started to come up behind her and the kids. With big kudos to my wife---she had good SA and saw the guy eyeballing her before parking and had a tingling in her sixth sense. She carries pepper spray on a keychain and had it armed and ready just in case.

As the guy rapidly approached, she turned to him and yelled, "BACK OFF NOW!" He kept coming and, luckily, the store manager was out front taking a break and noticed the whole thing. He came running out to help her and the guy took off. I'm going to find the manager and personally thank him.

My wife said she wanted to call me to come escort her from the store since I work two blocks away but her cellphone was dead.

Lessons learned--1. SA is important. If it doesn't feel right then it's okay to just drive off and come back later. 2. My wife has been reticent to obtain a CHL but now thinks it's important. 3. Always make sure your phone is charged or you have a charger in the car.

Good on her part! Glad she is ok.
Too bad she didn't spray him and let him run blindly in front of a moving truck.

Good for your wife. Now see if you can convince her to get that CHL so she can produce something a little more convincing than pepper spray.

I told her the same thing and she replied that he wasn't quite yet in range. It was coming soon.

Sounds like she did fine. Unfortunately it sometimes takes a bad event to open ones eyes to the real dangers of the world. Luckily it wasn't a costly lesson.

Good for her! Women have such great natural protective instincts. Glad no one was harmed.

I have been wondering why it often takes a close call for our wives (or girlfriends) to take all this self defense, S.A. preparation stuff seriously. Relying on instinct alone is a gamble. I know I had to get over a hump of wondering if all the expense and effort was worth it but I totally believe it is and is getting more so every day. I just wish I could convey that to her without being accused of watching too many movies or too much news.

So the guy was in a vehicle? Did your wife get the license number and report it? From the story you told it sounded like he took off running and left the car behind.

When you think about it, it is an SA FAILURE. Why? She had a sense about the guy before she parked. She should have driven off and gone to a different store. I hope you discuss this with her and tell her NEXT TIME, listen to your sixth sense.

Sometimes the BG can get a little to close for comfort, that doesnt make it a failure. She had the presence of mind to issue a verbal and had her SD weapon ( OC ) at the ready.

OP I am glad she is okay and Cudos to your wife.....

Excellent! Your wife's SA is probably in the top 1% of all people who have a pulse.

Any chance she got the plates on his truck? If so, I'd report the "attack" to the police. It's assault at a minimum, even if he didn't touch her. If he had, it becomes assault and battery.
