Yes I know it's a misnomer, but I got your attention.

For years, pro gun groups have been talking about how low the numbers are for the criminal use of "assault weapons." Has anyone else here noticed lately that AKs and "machine guns" are being mentioned frequently in the news?

Not only in the news but in those new reality tv shows featuring SWAT teams and assorted "oh-so-tactical" teams. The BG always have an AK and I have seen shows where they recover an SKS and call it an AK or initially say the BG is armed woth an AK and ends up that the BG had a lever action rifle. I am yet to see an AR, FAL or any other type of long gun. I am guessing producers think it is sexier (in a politically correct POV) to have a segment with an AK than any other weapon.

It's all "perception" and ratings. :hand1:

Why don't they just give factual news and leave the slanted editorializing BS out of it?

Because these socialist sob-sisters are constitutionally incapable of not trying to rescue the poor, befuddled masses (their opinion, not mine), from our ignorance of the dangers that beset us.

I used to sit on a fence in Germany to keep these kind on the eastern side.

They also have been calling them fully automatic when they are Semi.

Take it all as a hint/clue that worse is waiting on the "not too distant" horizon for law abiding gun owners.
Buy your Evil Black Rifle/AK and magazines while you still can.

Unfortunately, the "popular" press is majority of the firearms "educating" to the masses leading to the misnomers and ignorance. I recall getting into an argument with someone who kept insisting that those "AK-47 machineguns" and other "assault weapons" like M16's had no redeeming purpose since they were only meant to kill people. I replied that LE starting carrying M16 and AR variants so where they planning to summarily kill people? ....and that the AKs in question are mostly semi-auto ONLY variants of the AKM. I also explained what an assault rifle was.

Of course I was wrong 'cause they saw the NBC special on "assault weapons" years back. ....moan groan.

Yep..... ...........and then hearings in WDC.........where lots of "Smart" academicians and statisticians, and folks from Hollywood parade and strut around...........to a trumpet fanfare and talk about children and safety.........and the truth is a victim........

There is very limited honesty in some arenas. For an excellent, although very long read on scientific integrity, see the speech by Michael Crichton on January 17, 2003 at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, titled "Aliens Cause Global Warming" here:

Love him or not, he's dead on, and we shouldn't fall pry to the same bad science in our roles on any topic. :gah:

Assault Weapons??????

I have been trying to explain for years..... to the intellectualy challenged masses, assault weapon is a very broad term. If I used it in an offensive manner, a #2 pencil would qualify.

the AK is what the public wants to see in the BG hands.
That is part of it - helped/amplified of course in large part by media spin and hype. The anti's cannot grasp the concept of legal gun ownership that extends to something so militaristic.

If it merits the label ''assault'' then it must be bad - for anyone to have. Oh and yeah - the constant assumption that these are full auto is ridiculous too ...... lack of research and so factual accuracy. Combine all these elements - throw in a dash of Hollywierd and there you are ---- the average non-educated and gun nieve folks suck it up as real.

Be a different matter if - long odds I admit - the country was under attack and had to rely on its large source of private firearms ownership - then the sheep would be bleating ''save me'' and just love these weapons.

News isn't news anymore, if it ever was. The purpose of what they report is to get high viewer/reader numbers so they can get more advertising revenue. Also, I think the ‘AK’ label is just their idea of a ‘knowledgeable’ thing to say, even though they wouldn’t know an AK if their proctologist had to remove one.

This is the absolute truth.

In fact, if they didn't have to put in any news at all, they wouldn't. But of course, who would buy and read a newspaper if it were all advertisements? And who would turn on a t.v. show if it had no content, just ads? But really, the "news" content is there simply to get you to watch the ads. The more titillating it is (and as a result the less true and accurate, because the truth is usually boring) the more people will want to watch it. The more that the statistics can show are watching, the more advertisers want to put their product out before them, which makes the producers tons of money.

It's a sick game, and the casualty is the notion that we are watching true news.

at the last place i worked was a guy asking me what he should pay for a ak47, wanting to know if the seller is asking to much. I'll ask him full or semi auto and he answers full auto of course. i ask him if he ever fired a full auto and he replied "of course". Me: are you sure? He: yea, it was cool... i didn't have to load the chamber after every shot, it did it fully automatically. Me:  did it continue to fire if you keep holding the trigger back? He: No. Me: you are full of ****!

That was the last time i talked to this guy.

There seems to be alot of confusion about semi/full automatic out there.
