Natural disaster (ie Katrina). Man-made disaster (ie Bhopal gas leak). Civil order breakdown. Civil services breakdown, possibly with civil order breakdown. Any military operation to quell disturbances or contain whatever.

Any of those has a high likelihood of separating people from their routines, from food/water and supplies, could easily disrupt the economy. People on the edge will have few options. If bad enough, or if the State gets into the game and eliminates the possibility of travel, getting out/away might not be an option.

In any case, whether being stuck in or having to bug out, self-defense gets complicated with the elevated risk of (a) random crimes, (b) mob crimes, (c) fast-moving situations like your garden-variety riot, or (d) longer-term situations like the post-Katrina debacle and crimes.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.

As totally unprepared as nearly everyone is in this country - for any disaster or even interruption in the normal routine of things it will not have to be much that happens to create a potential SHTF on a grand scale.
Some of you are too young to remember The Toilet Paper Scare.

American Citizens beating each other up & fighting over rolls of T Paper. Remember that?

All the while leaving boxes of Kleenex - Paper Napkins & Paper Towels still on the store shelves.

    That totally amazed me.

All that would have to happen is for the food trucks to stop rolling into urban areas for three days and that would create a violent SHTF scenario in some areas.
People (in general) are only 3 days away from mass hysteria at any given point in time.

While I am not saying that any minor or temporary occurrence would instantly result in Urban Warfare...it will not take much to trip people off en masse these days to the degree that you may be forced to protect your own and your property.

Wasn't that the one started when Johnny Carson cracked a joke during his monologue on the Tonight Show? I believe it was at the same time as the first Arab oil embargo.

Here is what I have planned for...

    1. No power for a week
    2. No water for a week
    3. Bird Flu (this maybe TEOTWAWKI)
    4. No natural gas for a week would be a huge problem in the winter but not at all in the summer
    5. Major riots in the large cities while at work in the largest city in MN.
    6. Zombies I'm set for.

    I'm in good shape overall.

Don't foget about the 1992 L.A. Riots, or something similar. You have to be prepared even if something along the lines of the North Hollywood Shootout were to occur in your neighborhood. But I doubt that kind of stuff would happen out here in Texas...but you can never be too prepared!

    Cheers! M2

Take a look at what happens after some major sporting events when the fans go ballistic.

Going crazy, rioting and setting things on fire as well as attacking other innocent people is slowly being accepted into society as normal human behavior.

Wasn't that Ashcroft or Rove that recommended duct tape to prevent Anthrax?

I can prevent a lot of stuff from happening in D.C. with a role of duct tape.

If there aren't going to be any zombies, then I don't want to play this game:-)

3 largest threats where I am

    1. Sequoyah Nuclear Plant meltdown or radiation release. This would be especially tough because my boat is close to there.

    2. Rail car derailment with hazardous cargo.

    3. I-75 accident with hazardous cargo.

Of course random acts of idiocy are excluded but prepared for.
