Hello,
Let's say, hypothetically, that you are a farmer.
You're returning from town on an errand, only to discover that your hogs have gotten out, and are being harassed by a neighbor's shepherd dog. The neighbor has no livestock, and is in fact an engineer.
What do you do? Shoot the dog? Round up the hogs? Something else?

Need more information. Who's land are the hogs and dog on? How is the dog harassing them? Is he having ham for dinner or is he just barking at them?
I would round up the hogs. Iwouldn't shoot the dog unless he attacked me or tryed to kill the hogs. I would make sure I was on my property if I had to shoot the dog.
The hogs and dog are now on your land. The only way the dog is harassing them is by keeping them in a circle, running around them, and occasionally nipping one that doesn't stay with the herd.Quote:

So your hogs are out and about. Sounds like the dog is herding them for you. You need to give your neighbor a gift of some pork for his dog keeping an eye on your hogs. You may even want to consider making an offer for the dog if its a natural herder like that.

Sounds like a logistical round up is well possible, unless said dog turns nasty!
Plenty of variables are possible if imagination let's rip.
I'd try to buy the dog.
The Farmer should ask the neighbor (who is an engineer) to design the farmer a better fence and gate in trade for some good chops and nice slabs of bacon.

Now if the dog unlocked the hog pen then that is a different story. I would then buy the dog and breed him. He is obviously very talented and smarter that your average hog.
Sherpards have the natural instinct to herd animals. I've seen one do it that was never trained to do it, he just did it like he knew exactly what he was doing.
Herding and harassing are two different things.
Herding the hogs is a good thing...it'll keep them off the road.

Nope, the dog is doing what its supposed to do, and certainly he didnt open the gate to let the hogs out.
I wouldnt shoot the dog unless it was killing my animals or attacking a person. Nipping the feet and circle the livestock is how herding is done, no harm will come to the hogs from it.
If the dog is having bacon-Where's the shovel? Just herding your neighbor gets a ham if your hogs were loose
The dog is getting hogs mixed up with sheep so he is a little mixed up that's all. He's Not a "German Pigherd" :hand5:
