Exclamation I Have Just Been "assaulted!"

Last day of school Deep in the inner city. I am beloved by the good kids and hated by the BAD ACTORS because being the sheepdog that I am, I refuse to put up with their crap. I'll have them expelled, suspended or arrested as need be. I don't fear the punks at all. ZERO.

Just a few moments ago I was opening my locked classroom door to go inside (it's my planning period and I was trying to get a jump on "signing out of the building" for vacation) when a projectile SLAMMED into the door inches from my head! A pause of a split second and ANOTHER slammed into the door by my side! Raw egg. I'm splattered. I spun to face the threat but the little GO-rillas or insurgents had returned to the rock they crawled out from under. It's only 10 am. Of course, school is out today at 1pm after the last exam. I wonder if anybody will have the HUEVOS (spelling, Miggy?) to actually try and "GIT SOME" in a real frontal attack? Has never happened yet in 18 years but heck I am gettin' older. Maybe somebody thinks they will survive. Never mess with an old sheepdog. He might have one good BITE left. Of course I am unarmed...because I am a law abiding citizen and you know...I don't need a gun in this situation anyway. Even if I could carry here, I wouldn't carry a firearm, but a TASER would be KEWL. Maybe even some OC. But in this case, it's just little old me and some Aikido training and experiences. It's only going to take one to step up and have any other kid watch me put him down on his back, hard and the word will spread like it did at my last inner city school that the crazy old former army captain is not to be screwed with....

If I can get thru this day without putting somebody in jail or in the hospital....it may well be a miracle. The thugs are out in force and the SCHOOL is unable to cope. I called the office on the emergency line and so far nobody has responded to a THIRD DEGREE FELONY occurring on school property. That's the law. Egging me is classified as a "battery." It might get much worse within the next few hours. What's bad is that all the upper level administrators have left the property to attend the Graduation ceremonies. So the thugs really are in control here. I'll keep y'all posted. It might be an exciting day afterall.

Wait! I can hear movement on the other side of my locked door. The bell will ring in three minutes. I'll have to open my door to let the last class in to take the last final exam. If anybody is going to try something it might well be then. WOOHOO! Tally Ho! Scouts out!

Hope it goes well, I don't know how much they pay teachers but I do know it's not enough

But I like the perks. Summers off, Spring Break, Teacher planning days, 10 paid sick days a year and all the major holidays not to mention many of the Jewish holidays.....not too bad. But I'm also close to retirement.

Stay safe Jim - you have to make retirement!!!

I hope you can keep these idiots under control without having to resort to too much defensive work ........ that could I imagine lead to its own problems.

    Quick story:
Time frame Towards the end of the Vietnam war at the height of the protests
Location: High school social studies class in mid America

Our hero, the teacher, was trying to present the history of conflict and social systems to his class. He was unassuming. Balding, a bit stooped, quiet but serious. Think mid level manager at a bank.

Our villian, a punk student, thought he was all that. Protester, tough guy, sure that the system is corrupt and the teacher is full of it.

As the discussion proceded, our villian gets more and more heated and disruptive. Eventually he challenges Our hero on his perspective and facts, Accusing him of being a mouth piece for the war machine and knowing nothing about what's "really" going on. Our hero ponders for a moment and then reveals that he has a pretty good idea what is going on in Vietnam because he has been there. "The news and the protest serve a vital part in our society but they're not infalliable and they don't get the big picture"

At this point, the punk is in disbelief. "You? in the Army? You've gotta be kidding"

To prove his point, our villian decides to show this old man. A knife appears, our hero is threatened, and moments later everyone, even our hero, is shocked to find the villian writhing on the floor with a broken arm. Seems old, dumpy, balding Green Berets react badly when steel is waved in their face and their assailant is in arms reach.

You just never can tell how far someone will push and how far someone will be pushed.

    Good luck and stay safe.

    I feel for ya Ex...

Such different worlds out there for teachers.

A week ago I attended a graduation ceremony for 500 + kids graduating from Cabot, Ar. They had their ceremony in the All-Tel Arena in Little Rock. I went to see a nephew of mine graduate. I must say that it was a class act, best graduation I had ever seen. The teachers wore their robes with the colors of the colleges that they had graduated from and they stood and lined the hall were the the students walked into the arena. One the last student was in place, they took their seats ,which were placed all around the students. I thought that it was excellent that out of all of the seats that were placed for the teachers, only 4 were empty. This speaks highly of the teachers as none of the them were required to be there, everyone choosing to attend.

When the Honor guard walked in, the crowd of several thousand went quiet. For a few minutes as they were marching the colors to the stage...you could have heard a pin drop. The pledge was spoken, the National Anthem sand and a prayer was prayed. Every student walked up and was presented their certificate. It was a great event.

The week after that, my wife attended a graduation for our twin nephew and niece that was graduating from Cordova outside of Memphis. About 900 kids there. Constant air horns going off, people yelling and screaming like maniacs, the Color Guard was presented and everyone seemed to ignore them, they go no respect. The kids were loud, unruly, many of them chose to display gang symbols and gyrations as they walked across they stage, one girl did a strip tease and she walked across throwing her cloths on those seated there...much hooting and hollering going on. The Principal that was issuing Diplomas refused to give hers to her and had her escorted off by police.
It was like a jungle in there...RESPECT defiantly a foreign concept to many. My wife, a teacher of 30 years, was extremely disgusted by the whole event and couldn't fathom how out of control it was.

Two totally different worlds, just 4 hours apart. One as it should be, the other an example of things to be.

Hang in there and stay safe. Remember that YOU may be the only semblance of normal that some kids ever see. You are also an example to the cannon fodder gang-banger wannabees that not everyone will lay down and take it.

    Good luck.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

    Been there!

My first post here. Hello! I've been where you are, but not in 20 yrs! I quit teaching after 7 yrs. Just too much BS to put up with. I loved to teach the ones that wanted to be there, but always got cross-ways with the rebels. I'm not a psycologist.

Thanks you guys! 25 min to the last bell and all is quiet...in my room. The hallway sounds like a mini-riot but there are distinct lulls in the action. 25 min till the end of school for the kids. Figure another hour to get the campus completely cleared of students. The student parking lot is where I expect blood to flow. Any gang tensions or old scores will be settled there. Anybody waiting for me is going to have an unpleasant surprise. I have my trusty rolled up newspaper....it's a fairly dangerous field expedient device that my Aikido sensei taught me to use most effectively.

You know, the story about the dumpy balding green beret is awesome. I used to teach school with a stud from 2nd Rangers. Former 1SG (First Sergeant) who did four full tours with the battalion and was eventually given a medical discharge. With about 75% disability. 12 years is a lot of jumps and humpin' a rucksack. I taught with him at my old inner city school. Turns out we were both at Fort Lewis at the same time! He with the Rangers and me with the 9th ID. I saw him bust up a fight once with five participants involved. Very interesting. No busted bones or serious injuries but there were four unconscious bangers on the classroom floor while the unlucky #5 was perp walked on his tip toes out to waiting security.

MY best day was a great wristlock on a loud mouthed punk threatening to "SPLIT" my skull. He grabbed me by the front of my shirt and the situation evolved quickly from there. In fact, it was over so fast I barely remember what I did. I do remember the screams....But it happened in front of his "homies" and after that, word got around....

That's not counting turning a terrorist sympathizer into the FBI right after the 911 attacks. He himself wasn't busted but the 25 illegal M.E. aliens found living in the kid's apartment were...and so was his daddy...a citizen of Yemen. It's just not a good idea to be watching a replay of the towers coming down and do a "touchdown jig" in front of ME .... in my class room. Something didn't sit right and I discovered a lot of female teachers were terrified of the kid and the statements he'd made to them were downright threatening to the nation. Funny he never said a word to me...just that stupid little dance. But it was enough....That little episode scared the Administration off my back for years. When my buddy (FBI guy who shoots with my IDPA club) showed up at school, flashing that federal badge with INS along for the ride (in a school where I'll bet the illegal population was at least 25%)... asking questions...and MY name comes up...everybody walked carefully around me. Hey! I'm just here to help....

Welcome to the forum, Carleb! Thanks for making your first post addressing this situation. Now hustle on over to the new member thread and tell us more about yourself. We want all the juicy details like what your gun experience is and why you're here and stuff like that.

I'm not sweating the punks. I was well prepped for this job: Besides being an infantry captain I was a state of Florida Probation and Parole Officer after I left active duty in the 1980s. After those killers and rapists and druggies, there is no kid I fear.

I know well the types of body language will precede an attack. And you're 100% correct, they are cowards. But they usually do travel in packs and numbers make them brave. Brave...but stupid. I'm not really too worried. I'm just PI$$ED about the eggs earlier.

My wife has 31 years in the school system at a really nice school. When she retires in about four years we hope that we'll have worked our investments and finances to allow me to take early retirement so we can move out of this cesspool. Maybe to the mountains of NC.

HEY! THE BELL JUST RANG! The 2006-07 school year has just ended for us. YIPPEE!

The security guards are sweeping the halls....maybe I'm okay. I'll give a full update when I get home because the teacher parking lot is the final challenge.

UPDATE: I wondered why it got SO quiet so suddenly! God truly does listen to prayers. There is a good old fashioned TROPICAL DOWNPOUR outside. A real heavy rain is a certain (forgive me) DAMPER on kids with violent tendencies. It's really pouring. I may hafta swim home.

Anyway, it seems my crisis is passed.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.....

Wow, things have changed since I was in school.

Although I do remember the time one of the kids threw a snowball at a teacher and it knocked his wig off, he retired soon after, I'm sure he thought nobody knew that the weird polyester thing on his head wasn't actually hair.

Stay safe, you're making your world sound like an episode of the Gecko45 files...

    ExSoldier,
You are certainly qualified to deal with your situation, and I don't blame you for being pi$$ed. I salute your dedication to others. I have a funny story about "students" egging my house, but that is for another time.

Thanks for your welcome and yes, I will get over and post some stuff about myself.

    Good luck to you,
    Bob
